Week one is over already!

The first week of Horizons 2019 is officially over and week two has begun! The USN Horizons students and staff spent the first 5 days of camp making new friends, adjusting to new routines, and gaining new knowledge. The next 5 weeks are sure to be filled with adventure and learning.

Because of your generosity, Horizons at USN kicked off its sixth summer providing more than 85 students in Nashville a high quality-learning experience outside the traditional school year. We have students grades 1-6 on campus working to improve their literacy and math skills while participating in debate, creative writing, science experiments, swim lessons, coding, art, theater, book clubs, field trips in and outside of Tennessee, and community service. We look forward to sharing our journey with you over the next few week via these weekly newsletters. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, please feel free to stop in and visit.

INGRAM Book Donation

USN Horizons would like to extend a special thank you to INGRAM for providing each and every student with their own copy of a summer reading book. Thank you for going above and beyond to support the students' literacy learning this summer.

Joshua Dobbs Visits

This Friday Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs visited USN's campus to hangout with the Horizons students. Dobbs, who graduated from University of Tennessee with a degree in aerospace engineering, shared the book Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race. Our oldest students got the opportunity to ask Dobbs questions about his life. He encouraged them to stay true to themselves throughout middle school in order to achieve their dreams. He is a true inspiration not only on the football field but also in the classroom. Thank you for your time and support Mr. Dobbs!

1st Grade

This summer the youngest Horizons students will be learning all about life cycles! Through reading, observing and taking field trips, they will explore the way organisms change over time. Last week they focused on getting to know their classmates and teachers as well as becoming comfortable in their new Horizons environment. They have already dove into their literacy learning for the summer by practicing their reading and writing skills. The staff at Horizons welcomes this new class of scholars and is excited to watch them learn and grow over the coming years!

3rd Grade

This summer, third grade is learning all about space! They have already learned about the inner and outer planets and are looking forward to learning more about each planet as well as space travel. In order to reinforce their basics, they began by playing a space vocabulary matching game. As part of their space studies, third grade is looking forward to visiting the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville and the Adventure Science Center in Nashville. Third Grade also started to solidify their classroom community by playing fun get-to-know-you games and drafting a classroom charter.

5th Grade

The Horizons fifth grade scholars began camp with team building activities and classroom charter writing. They split up into three classroom houses and drafted group social and academic goals for the summer. Fifth grade also began learning to write persuasive essays. Last week they explored arguments for and against school uniforms and each chose a stance from which to write. They had fun brainstorming together and critiquing each others writing. The fifth graders are looking forward to participating in USN camps in the mornings during weeks three and four!

2nd Grade

Last week the second graders began to establish their classroom community through crafting a collective charter. They agreed that at Horizons they would strive to make each other feel respected, happy, welcomed, comfortable, and excited. Second grade began brainstorming for their summer writing projects by creating personal "Heart Maps". They refreshed their math skills by partaking in a dice game that required them to add and subtract up to 20. This summer the class will focus on learning about the city of Nashville, including taking field trips to famous landmarks.

4th Grade

Fourth grade is going "All STEAM Ahead" this summer! They will be focusing their studies on all things science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Last week they got to know each other by making letter islands, examining character traits, and creating paper fortune-tellers highlighting their personal preferences. They had a blast carving out 3-D cardboard name tags. They also practiced math skills with trivia games and number-of-the-day tasks. This week they are looking forward to writing personal stories and diving into their book study with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.

6th Grade

This summer the rising sixth grade classroom's theme will be "Making Connections - Mathematics and the Real World". They dove into their studies by exploring the order of operations and learning to write mathematical expressions. In the coming weeks they will create a project exploring how math can be seen throughout their everyday lives. The sixth graders will also be reading Lions of Little Rock as a class this summer. They did a great job learning to annotate their text and explore the literature beyond its surface.
