In March FILMEXPLORER followed two online festivals, the Festival international et Forum sur les droits humains (FIFDH, Geneva) and the Schweizer Jugendfilmtage (Zurich). These festivals prove how important the discussion of films is: be it the political debates that a film provokes or the important feedback for young people discovering filmmaking, a critical contribution appears to be an essential task, as it remains forever focused on also the form and specificity of film medium.

Schweizer Jugendfilmtage

FILMEXPLORER’s commitment to encourage the younger generations of filmmakers has taken the form of a space of discussion within the framework of Schweizer Jugendfilmtage’s online events: «And now, why did you create this film?».

We want to highlight five impressive works amongst the five sections of the competition:

Nomads in Remembering by Jennifer Merlyn Scherler
This Is an Invitation by Catherine Schöberl
Bicemo najbolji by Jelena Vujovic
21 by Vital Z’Brun
Ausriss by David Escobar

The following promising films deserve a special mention:
Städer by David Poly, Limmatplatzobjekt 321729 by Anna Zeller, Zu Dritt by Agnèse Laposi and Benjamin Bucher, Kartonzelle by Tristan Hell, 2402 by Tobias Zürrer

Among the Mexican films in focus at the Schweizer Jugendfilmtage, these titles captured our attention:
La chica de dos cabezas – The Girl with two heads by Betzabé Garcia
Asi en la tierra – So on Earth by Omar Rivero
La abuela del año – Granny of the Year by Olivia Luengas

Festival international et Forum sur les droits humains

«Why a film?» – and not a written or photographic dossier, for example – has been our main question to orientate our critical gaze on the films presented at the FIFDH in Geneva. We believe that film is a particular (and expensive) expressive form and should not be considered as a standardised instrument of communication.
Besides films like Ghosts or Josep, which also present some elements of interest, you will find below our selection of films to be discussed as films:
