New year, new opportunities for OneHeart guests

OneHeart welcomed representatives from nearly 20 local employers to the very first “New Year New Opportunities Expo” at the campus on Jan. 22.

The expo served as a sort of atypical career fair, giving OneHeart guests the chance to meet with and learn from individuals working in a range of fields: healthcare, hospitality, business, banking, construction, and law enforcement, just to name a few.

“Often, people in poverty struggle to see past the immediate future, so their goals tend to be short-sighted,” said Julie Oberlander, OneHeart’s Community Outreach Coordinator. “The purpose of the expo was simply to expose OneHeart guests to a variety of career options, so they understand what opportunities exist and what it takes to succeed in those fields.”

The latest local surge in COVID cases affected guest turnout, as did the fact that most guests are employed and some were at work during the half-day event, but those who were able to participate engaged in good conversations with employers. One human resources representative from a large company in town left the campus hopeful that she found a potential candidate to fill an open position.

“It was our first time hosting an event like this, but it will not be the last,” Oberlander said. “We are already brainstorming ways to make the next one even better and more impactful. As an organization, OneHeart seeks to bolster the local workforce, and we do that by helping our guests make connections to employers with great opportunities for personal and professional growth.”
