Last Supper at the Biblical History Center – April 6th

The Cornerstone Class invites Rome First members to join them on a trip to the Biblical History Center in LaGrange on Saturday, April 6th. We will be there from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and have a guided Passover meal at 11:30 a.m. We have reservations for 25. Cost is $40 per person plus tax. This includes seeing artifacts from the Israeli Museum (some dating to the time of Abraham), the Passover meal, and time in their Biblical Garden (full of reproductions giving a sense of Biblical life.)  A guide will lead each activity. Note - we'll be going a week before Holy Week and this trip is a wonderful way to prepare for Easter.  We will leave from the church at 8:30 a.m. and expect to be back by 4:30 p.m.  Transportation plans are being finalized but you should be able to ride with the class if you would like.  Email chris.barbieri@ngumc.net by March 30th to reserve your spot.

April's Communion offering benefits
UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief)

Founded in the 1940s, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the humanitarian relief and development arm of the United Methodist Church.  UMCOR strengthens and transforms people and communities by working globally to alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing.  The work of UMCOR is categorized in three major areas:  humanitarian relief/disaster response, sustainable development, and global health.
April's communion offering goes to support the lifesaving ministry and mission of UMCOR.

Mission Opportunities

Rome First UMC Mission Trips:  Save the dates!

Cass Community, Detroit, MI, July 14th-19th, 2019
Puerto Rico, June 18th-25th, 2020

Two vital aspects of mission are emergency relief assistance and long term recovery partnership.  In the immediate aftermath of disaster - however it may occur in a neighborhood, a city, or at the family level, emergency relief is the most fundamental need.  There is no recovery without it.  After the immediate crisis has passed, long term recovery-being fully restored back into community as a contributing member is a work of partnership, creativity and support.  Rome First UMC has the opportunity to help in the work of both aspects of mission.

Cass Community in Detroit, MI began as a ministry of Cass Community UMC.  Today Cass Community Social Services works across the city in areas of concentrated poverty providing programs for senior citizens, homeless children, disabled, unemployed and homeless individuals.  The creative programs of Cass Community, under direction of Rev. Faith Fowler, are a unique model of restoration and transformation.  Check out their website, casscommunity.org, to learn more.  Faith Fowler's book is also available in the Wilder Center lobby.

Cass Community needs the work of 5,000 volunteers a year to make their mission go.  Volunteers ages 10 and up, of every skill set level, or none at all, are welcome.  This summer, July 14th-18th, Rome First UMC will send a team to help, and also learn from, Cass Community.  If you're interested or would like more information, please let us know.  Call the Church Office of contact cathy@romefirst.org.

In 2017, Category 5 Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico.  As of now, there are still 50,000 homes in need of repair.  Workintg with the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico, UMCOR has sent over 100 teams with over 1,000 members to help with rebuilding.  UMCOR's  new goal is to repair 36 homes per month.  Given that the Methodist Church of PR has made available three retreat camps to encourage teams to come lend a hand.  Nest summer, June 18th-25th, 2020, a team from Rome First UMC will answer the call.  Ages 18 and up, all skill levels of none at all, are welcome and needed.  If you're interested, please let us know.  Information packets available in the office.

There is no recovery without rebuilding first.  The formerly homeless of Cass Community are now building and delivering solar panels to the people of Puerto Rico.  Rome First UMC has the opportunity to be a small part of good work alongside great people.

Other Mission News

Sunday, May 5th, 11:30am-2:30pm, is Good Neighbors Food Truck Rally right in our own parking lot.  Stay after church and enjoy Lunch with Your Neighbors.  There will be an open house, a chance to learn what God Neighbors Ministry is all about, and good food with good company.  100% of proceeds fund the work of Good Neighbors Ministry.

ALL HANDS NEEDED!
Rome First UMC will join with Community Church Ministry (and other churches) to help facilitate an Easter Egg Hunt and meal for local families in government housing and local mobile home communities.  The events are on various Saturday (morning/afternoon) and Thursday (evening) and last only 2 hours.  We are seeking VOLUNTEERS of any age to help with this ministry opportunity.   We need 6-10 volunteers for a total of 4 events (serve at one or more).  This is a great opportunity for  ALL to get outside of the walls of our church building and serve ALL in our local community.  Please contact Vincent Moreno for more info or to sign up to participate.  (706)331-6634 or vincent.moreno@romefirst.org
