Visual Communicators Newsletter
JULY 2017

This is a monthly newsletter from the UN Designers and Visual Communicators Group in Geneva. Drop us a line if you would like to collaborate or share any material in this newsletter:
Have you joined our FB Group page? we want to use it as a platform to communicate more regularly, transfer knowledge and share our work. Hope to see you there!

Power her choices

Tuesday 11th July was World Population Day. There are many aspects to world population, and one of them is family planning. Fabrica, the creative muscle from Benetton, has come up with an interesting campaign approach for UNFPA. As a result, 'Power her choices' puts the message across using a very strong graphic approach.

Dollar street

Another quite different take on world population issues is the one taken by NGO GapMinder. 'Dollar Street' is a very ambitious project that mix stats with storytelling in an innovative way, trying to show us how different families live around the world. It is not totally developed yet, but having a tour through their website shows you the big potential of the project.

Poverty is sexist

Such a statement is said (and proofed) by NGO One. They always have taken visual communications very seriously in their work: from displaying timelines to creating engaging annual reports. And this campaign, 'Making the Connection' is no different. A great way of combining data visualization and storytelling, all wrapped up into interactive web design.

July Inspiration
A website
Following on the population theme, here is this site from the PRB, with interesting data visualization on population growth, designed in a very simple and clean way.
An aid
One of the challenges we often face is designing with accessibility in mind. UK gov has created a very useful webpage with multilingual posters providing guidance on the issue.
A contest
If you happen to live in Geneva and love photography, this may be your chance to shine. Join this photo-competition before July 20th and be part of the annual Geneva Photo-club exhibition!
An exhibition
If you like good magazine design and typography, then this exhibition alone will be worth a trip to the big apple: New York Times magazine type, at the Type Directors Club from June to September.
A workshop
Despite our international background, even UN designers can be a bit too latin-centric sometimes. Typeworks will try to fix this with their cyrillic type design workshop next 23-26 of August.
A chart
The data visualization team at FT has come up with this chart, showing us different kinds of data visualization. Their 'visual vocabulary' classification can be downloaded as a pdf from here.
