A Newsletter from the UN & NGOs Designers Group Geneva
Visual Communicators Newsletter

This is a monthly newsletter from the UN Designers and Visual Communicators Group in Geneva. Drop us a line if you would like to collaborate or share any material in this newsletter:

Nothing but the truth

While Kashoggi's case has caused rivers of ink to flow, most of the 182 journalists killed in the last two years went unnoticed. So it has never been a more timely date than this 2nd Novembe for Unesco's new campaign under the #TruthNeverDies hashtag, with a very nice website and plenty of promotional material. An homage for all those who lost their lives, and a good reminder on how priceless is to have freedom of expression. Plus a great toolkit to celebrate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

Goals Ahoy!

If last month we featured how Sustainable Development Goals were linked to UN visual identity, this month we bring you the agency who helped UNDG to do so. Ahoy is an international studio with offices in NYC, Zurich and Berlin. Their founding members Connie Koch and Aline Ozkan were trained under the likes of Tibor Kalman or Sagmeister, from whom they learnt that message matters more than design. In their 18 years of life they have specialized in communication with a pleasant 'wake up call' for everyone and everything seeking to make the world a nicer place, working with/for many of the UN family and other humanitarian / international organizations. So if you are looking for someone to deliver good visual messaging, count with them to lead your ship to a good harbour!

War on war

War sadly has many sides, and this time ICRC and National Geographic have joined forces to show us one of its less talked about: A Women’s War is an equally visually appealing and socially relevant project that takes us on a journey around the world where photography takes centre stage. Portraiture photography at its best that serves as a starting point to tell us individual stories, while at the same time challenges us to question the simple labels we attach to women in war.
ICRC has yet another photography partnership, this time with Laia Abril-Suyay and Centre de la Photographie Geneve. In this collaboration photography is used as a medium to show us what it means to long for and to search for a missing mother, father, sister... Exhibition is open until 25.11.2018. Don’t miss it!

November Inspiration
A photo
International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is this 29th, and this already famous photo reminds us of one of the most desperate human rights situations in the world.
A day
“When nature calls… we need a toilet.”  The always challenging (and often surprising) campaign for World Toilet Day is about nature-based solutions. Or technologic ones, with the help of Bill Gates.
A lettering
ITU letters come alive in a set of seven motion graphics, thanks to Mutanthands studio, using the infographic skills of Jing Zhang animated by James Wignall.
A meetup
Celebrate World Usability Day in Geneva thanks to the next UX meetup on November 8. The theme of "UX Design for Good or Evil" promises some interesting talks including one from WHO.
A figure
For World Diabetes Day Dataviz agency Ferdio visualized figures by using dots, or the Rule of Halves by simply folding a paper. The simplest solution can also be the most effective.
A doodle
