UN branded – first impressions

Around 70 people from over 25 organizations attended the 10th UN Designers & Visual Communicators meeting, organized together with the Perception Change Project team. UN BRANDED had the ambitious goal of looking at UN visual identity and branding issues. For that matter, we tried to gather voices covering different angles. Best scoop of the event was knowing that the design unit at NYC, in consultation with multiple UN offices and departments, is working in revamping the UN brand at Secretariat level. Hopefully, we will inform you more about this project at the end of Q1 2018. Regarding the panelists, Stefan Tschauko, brought us the academic perspective through his surveys and observations, discussing the need for a more cohesive approach to branding in the UN system; From the point of view of external design studios, Giacomo Frigerio, from Blossoming studio, shared good advice on how to bring identity to campaigns without losing creativity; Finally, Geoff Linsell, from Moving Brands, gave us some pointers regarding what it takes to build a successful brand.
Most importantly, the meeting opened up to a conversation which we hope will continue in other upcoming meetings.
For those who couldn't attend here is a dropbox link to access the presentations of our three panelists. And please, if you have a minute, fill this feedback form for us to better know how can we improve our meetings.

Interbrand takes on SDGs

Global mega-agency Interbrand has put its creative muscle to work towards a global campaing labelled #IBACTS ( we assume meaning "InterBrand acts"?) putting together some very creative work regarding the 17 SDGs. You can check some of the work here; A great display of creativity to boost the SDGs.

2018 visual trends

The good thing about forecasting trends is that is very difficult to get them wrong. Someone, somewhere is likely to be using one of these tricks which will justify its inclusion in one of the multiple lists mushrooming in the net these days. We like to take them as pure inspiration, and under that angle we would recommend this one, focused mostly in visual trends or this one, with more inclination towards UX design. Our personal prediction? Less gimmicks, more substance, approaching design as editorial content... well, may be more of a wish than a trend, but definitely something worth wishing for!

January Inspiration
An award
Congrats to the Social Media team at UNOG who won the 3rd Geneva Engage Awards. Part of their success came from the use of video in their channels. Full list of awardees, here
A website
Latest OCHA microsite is just another good example that a clean, neat and simple approach to information can put the message across better than any bells and whistles.
A documentary
Gauthier Roussilhe is the mind behind this interesting project: a set of interviews with designers around the subject of ethics and graphic design practice. Food for thought.
A special day
27 January is Holocaust Remembrance Day, and there are multiple activities already lined up. to attend UNOG private photo exhibit about Swiss Holocaust survivors on the 18th, apply here.
A forum
How UN work would look like if based in (Art)Basel? This good looking site for the Basel Peace Forum could be a good hint. We are particularly interested in 'the role of art in peacebuliding' pavilion.
An event
19-20 January are HEAD University 2018 Open Day dates. Also 18 will have the vernissage of Changer le Monde, the exhibiton of its Visual Communications students.
