Our Vision

A Zimbabwe where people access quality palliative & bereavement care to reduce suffering & pain & improve the quality of their lives

 
News in Brief

  • We end the year after a busy quarter commencing with the development of a new strategy. Over the next 3 years Island will continue to focus on delivery of quality palliative & bereavement care services & strengthen its research & advocacy efforts
  • True Colours Trust awarded Island with a 2 year grant for key staff (nurses & social workers) & medication. This support is critically needed. Thank you True Colours
  • During September we held our 37th AGM. From 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016 Island supported patients & clients with palliative & bereavement services as follows:
    • 14 908 home visits
    • 81 hospital visits
    • 2 048 office consults
    • 814 clients provided with bereavement & psychosocial support services
    • 326 bereaved children & young carers supported
  • In October we flew in to Nairobi to learn how to digitalize our data for the Better Health for Older Persons in Africa (BHOPA) Project by Help Age International
  • The management team visited our Marondera & Mutare branches to plan for 2017
  • Island, Hospice UK and the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance hosted an event on community palliative care and Universal Health Care in London:  http://bit.ly/2hf96ZV
  • While in London we met with new & existing donors, Zimbabweans & Rotarians in the UK to raise awareness. A big thank you to everyone involved
  • We supported the Ministry of Health & Childcare in selecting the consultants that will develop the healthy aging strategy for Zimbabwe

Advocacy & Networking


Island has been making a lot of noise in an effort to ensure that the 1 in 60 Zimbabweans in need of palliative care get it. Here's what we have been up to:

  • We participated in the World Hospice & Palliative Care Day (aired on ZBC!)
  • Island spoke about the importance of opioids at the pharmaceutical association conference
  • We met the Perm Sec for health & his top team to talk about how we can realize the WHA67.19 Resolution http://www.who.int/ncds/management/palliative-care/en/  
  • Island spoke at Community Working Group for Health Annual National Meeting. We showed this film  https://goto.gg/24223 & asked what is the cost of not caring?
  • We participated in the National Cancer Control workshop in Bulawayo
  • Staff participated in the ICPCN 'Hats On' campaign
  • Island attended the 2nd Africa Regional conference of Gerontology & Geriatrics
  • Volunteer Pricila Mabande continues to lead our Island Insights show on Star FM
