Our Vision

A Zimbabwe where people access quality palliative & bereavement care to reduce suffering & pain & improve the quality of their lives

News in Brief

  • The year started with a bang when we received word that Island Hospice & Healthcare (Island) has been recognized as a Palliative Care Centre of Excellence following its recent nomination by the World Health Organization to be evaluated as a model of best practice & demonstration site for Africa. Island represents Zimbabwe as the only African & low-income country chosen out of 6 countries selected.
  • We participated in the 2017 World Cancer Day held at Harare Hospital 3 February & personally thanked the WHO Representative to Zimbabwe for the nomination.
  • C2 Media (https://www.c2.co.zw) built us a fantastic new website. Read our blog posts, keep up- to-date with palliative care developments or listen to our radio shows here: http://www.islandhospice.care/  Thank you C2 Media
  • Research published in the Journal of Pain & Symptom management estimates Children's Palliative Care in Zimbabwe to be the highest in the world!  For more about this read here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0885392416304936
  • This quarter we provided a one day stress management course to 21 Econet Wireless staff. These services fall under the healthcare side of our organization. All funds raised are used to support  palliative care patients & families. For more info. email admin@islandhospice.co.zw

Dr Richard Harding Visits Zimbabwe!

Dr Richard Harding, Reader in Palliative Care at the Cicely Saunders Institute at Kings College London trained Island staff and partners on the palliative care outcome scale. He also accompanied our team as they visited patients in Mabvuku.

Dr Harding said: “It was a pleasure to visit Africa’s first hospice, and to see the work of Dame Cicely continuing in the world. I was impressed by Island’s commitment to quality and their focus on measuring the outcomes of the care that they deliver" Read here for more about the trip:  http://www.ehospice.com/ArticleView/tabid/10686/ArticleId/21862/language/en-GB/View.aspx

Special thanks to Jenny Hunt for hosting Richard.
