Defund the Police, Record Number of Black Americans Killed

Former Councilman and minister says emphasis on equity reform
puts police at risk
Columbia, South Carolina – Progressive leaders who fought hard to defund the police are finding the results are not what they expected. Rather than to instill equity in the justice system, it has had the opposite impact on Blacks who are dying at an unprecedented rate at the hands of other Blacks.

In 2019, at least 7,484 Black Americans were murdered. That number shot up to at least 9,941 murders in 2020, meaning there was an increase of 2,457 Black Americans murdered over the previous year. These numbers don’t tell the entire story. The murders are not at the hands of out-of-control police, they are the result of Blacks murdering Blacks. In other words, the racial imbalance of police confrontations and incarcerations are a consequence of demographics, not racial prejudice.

Michael Letts is an ordained minister, Councilman, and founder of In-Vest provides active-shooter vests (6,500 through last January alone). He sees an increasing need to keep police safe, funded, and encouraged. “First, we must protect those who serve us. Second, we need to build up, rather than tear down, the nuclear family. Third, we need to encourage politicians to get tougher on career criminals.” Letts believes the quick releases that often lead to recidivistic and opportunistic crime are part of the problem. “These early releases put communities at risk and police at risk.” The rate of felony re-offense among defendants out of jail pre-trial because of bail reform needs to stop.

Pointing to the record number of police killed in 2021, Letts says there is a direct correlation between anti-police rhetoric and the often-cold-blooded murder of people sworn to protect citizens. As a Christian and as a minister, Letts believes God has called him to help reverse the trend that encourages the defunding those who are there to protect us. A society that diminishes and degrades the rule of law, and those who uphold it, are asking for exactly the kind of anarchy we are seeing today, says Letts.
