Why Young People Are Leaving Church

Turning good intentions into happy, godly kids
Dallas, Texas – Young people raised in a Christian family that attended church are leaving the church if they don’t find connection. Just ten percent of 18-29-year-olds are considered “resilient believers” according to a Barna Research poll. Many young people have their hand on the door, ready to leave.
In a new book by businessman and author, Tim Alba, he states clearly that raising our kids and educating our kids is a parental responsibility. In Well Done, Mom & Dad! Alba talks frankly about what he got right and where he failed. He says most of us end up parenting by default rather than by intention. “Most parents are good parents with good intentions who want simple solutions and quick fixes for today’s problems.”
His book lays out the vision, encourages parents to adopt a specific approach that helps them arrive at a singular purpose. “Your job isn’t to get your children to copy you. It’s to align their godly treasures with God.” Alba is a realist who acknowledges, “Despite good intentions, the best treasure can get squeezed out.”
Alba’s practical approach encourages parents to identify 50 key pursuits (loving your spouse or health/fitness as examples). The second is to pinpoint 20 priorities (a faithful legacy or serving others). Then, identifying 5 passions and finally developing a purpose. “My family didn’t need more truth; we needed truth to be made real,” says Alba.
The end goal is to hear God say, “Well done My good and faithful servant.” Getting to that place is a lifetime of commitment and planning. If you are struggling to connect with your kids, he encourages parents to “Keep investing. Keep casting vision.” From Alba’s experience, “Purpose is what you are called to do; passion is what you’re compelled to do.” This humble conviction is what fuels faithfulness in the midst of uncertainty, insecurity, or the pressure of a godless culture. “God-honoring passion has an unending determination to realize God-given dreams.”
