A Biblical Perspective on Inflation

Former CEO, Businesswoman says fear often drives poor choices
Lakeland, Florida – “You can’t spend your way to financial health or wealth” says Debbie Kirk. Many Christians are falling into bad habits when it comes to handling money. Today, there is a lot of fear going around as sky-high prices for goods and services is hurting consumers as well as workers. “Fear brings poverty,” says Kirk, a businesswoman and former CEO.
As inflation reached 8.5% for the year this week, some people are speaking out about failed fiscal policies that are hurting ordinary citizens. “We cannot spend our way to a balanced, healthy economy and continue adding to our $30 trillion national debt,” said West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin.

Food prices rose 8.8 percent over the past 12 months and 1 percent in March alone, while gasoline prices were up 48 percent on the year after an 18.3 percent increase in March, according to the Labor Department data. With surging prices, Kirk says it is tempting for Christians to get caught up in the contagion of fear. Jesus understood this as well since He said, “Fear not” more than seventy times.

There is no ambiguity about how God views finances. The borrower is servant to the lender, and we reap what we sow, morally as well as financially. Kirk says the other aspect is one of investing in the Kingdom. In Wealth without Sorrow, Kirk decries the so-called “prosperity gospel,” something she says makes her cringe. But she does believe there are basic principles that God wants us to adopt that will enable us to be debt free. “Obedience is a key” she says.

Christians are admonished not to store up for themselves riches on earth where moth and rust corrupt, or thieves can break in and steal. There are clear admonitions about fear, about finances, about trust in God’s care for His people. In fear, Kirk suggests, we make poor decisions about the future or tighten up and give less to God’s work. While these may seem prudent in the moment, they are not the way that God views financial success.
