"Community Pantry"

Food Donation

You might have noticed we have a new food donation box in our lobby... We are happy to share that we will be partnering with Seattle Athletic Club Downtown Fitness Director, Jacob Luckey to contribute our donations to his "Community Pantry"! Jacob resides near Garfield High School and he quickly became aware of the need in his community so he decided to setup an outdoor pantry in front of his house. Jacob wanted to share with us why his little pantry is so near and dear to his heart:

'A woman stopped me last summer when I was in the yard gardening and asked if I had put the pantry up. I told her I had and that growing up my family was so poor that at times we got food from a dumpster and I did not want anyone in my community to go through the same experience, so I created the Community Pantry idea.

The woman told me that she moved here from Hawaii with her 5 children and had lost her job. She was walking home, wondering how she was going to feed her children and came upon the pantry. She said she took some beans, rice and stewed tomatoes and was relieved to know she would be able to make dinner that night for her kids. She has since found another job and has made sure to swing by each week to put something back into the pantry.'

This is what it means to pay it forward and we know our donations will be going directly to those who need it, especially those who may be barely getting by, but don't quite qualify for food stamps. We can wait to help fill up your pantry, Jacob!

Employee of the Month

Jillian Jenkins

Please join us in congratulating our Employee of the Month, Jillian Jenkins! Jillian certainly hasn’t been here long - she joined the Childcare team late December of 2018 and shortly after was snagged for the Sports Desk too. Yet, in these brief few months of being at the Club, she has won the hearts of both members, young and old, as well as our entire staff. Her willingness to play, sing, and engage in all of the  shenanigans kids throw her way are just a few examples of how she shines here at the Club. Jillian is rarely seen without a smile on her face and always has something nice and positive to say. You know you can always count on her! And, in turn, Jillian’s sincerity and delightfulness will bring a smile to your face as well.

Jillian was born and raised in South Seattle, where she still currently resides and has been working towards a Certified Nursing Assistant degree. She plans on taking the state exam soon. Jillian really loves being crafty, which comes in handy in Kid’s Court! She spends her free time listening to old time radio and music, sewing, painting and playing the guitar. She even brings in her guitar from time to time and plays along with the kids.

Jillian, you are much appreciated and a welcomed addition to the Club. Thanks for being so fantastic!

Inspirational Member of the Month

Kay Beck

We are so excited to announce our Inspirational Member of the Month, Kay Beck. Kay's amazing energy and kind heart can be felt by everyone around her. Kay is 83 years young and is an inspiration to all who meet her. Whether in her favorite spin class or interacting in the Club, her warm presence and approachability is evident.

Kay was born in Ohio in 1936 and remembers the life altering effects of the Depression and WWII. After finishing college she worked for the Red Cross and went on the teach school in Boston. There she renewed her friendship with a high school friend, Jack who had just been discharged from the Navy. They married in 1962, settling in Seattle. They went on to have two beautiful daughters, each having 2 children of their own. Sadly, she lost Jack in 1991.

Exercise has always been an important part of her family. After the loss of Jack, SAC became a very important part of her life. Kay loves the contagious energy and friendly supportive environment she finds at the Club. She says she to loves being around people of all ages who are working hard to stay in shape in spite of their busy lives. Dylan Thomas said, "Do not go gentle into that good night." Her mantra is a little more prosaic - it is, "Use it or lose it!" If you have taken a spin class with Kay, you know exactly what she means!

We love having Kay as part of our SAC family and all aspire to be like her. Congratulations, Kay!

We live in a quick-paced world! Pressure from school, competitive sports, chores, video games, the internet and more keep us going, going, going all day. We don’t often think about kids being stressed out, but all of these things can and do effect our children. Yoga can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for self-health and relaxation, they can navigate life's challenges with a little more ease. Yoga encourages self-esteem and supports body awareness with a physical activity that's noncompetitive. Learning how to cooperate and be compassionate rather than in competition is one of the greatest things we can teach our children. Yoga can help to bring the inner light and joy that all kids have to the surface.

Want longer than 45 minutes to finish your workout? Don’t worry, we can escort your child to Kid’s Court after Yoga while you finish BODYPUMP, Cycle, run that extra mile, or just take a shower.

April Film Night: The Hunt for Red October (1990)

Wednesday, April 10th │7:00-9:00 pm
Members: Complimentary │ Non-Members: Standard Guest Fee

The Hunt for Red October, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard, The Thomas Crown Affair, Rollerball) and based on a novel by Tom Clancy, tells the story of a Soviet submarine, Red October, that is equipped with a new engine that allows it to run virtually silent and can lie outside of any city ready to shoot deadly missiles, as CIA agent Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) suspects. The timeframe is November 1984, before Gorbachev came to power. The Lithuanian sub-commander, Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), plans to defect, but will he do so? The plot goes hither and yon. More importantly will you find your way to the SAC film series exploring the Cold War, old and new?

Enjoy complimentary appetizers and wine during the film, as well as post-film discussion with film buff, Jim Clauss.
