Fall is here which means that daylight saving ends and we fall back one hour. Remember to set your clocks back before going to bed on Saturday, November 4th. We want to make sure we have everyone here for our Sunday morning classes!

1000 Acts of kindness

Let’s make a point to put a smile on a stranger’s face, join the Seattle Athletic Club and others in our community on Thursday November 16th.  Get your family, friends and co-works to join you in creating kindness for others.

Meal Planning and Prepping Workshop

Are you sabotaging your weight loss? Can’t find healthy lunch take out options at work?
 
Learn the tools to successful weight loss, healthy eating and keeping to your goals! This interactive workshop will focus on the basics of creating a healthy routine for grocery shopping, provide alternative tasty snack options and tips for how to plan and prepare meals ahead of time. Learn how to make meal planning and preparing easy and include it in your schedule.
 
Workshop includes:
First 30 minutes:
Planning basics – map out what to eat and when to eat using the worksheet provided.  Discover any pitfalls in your current meal plan and get ideas on what to put in them to balance out your day.
 
Second 30 minutes:
Prepping basics – using your week’s meal plan learn about useful equipment for healthy eating, learn cooking methods like steaming, blanching, roasting; learn how to reuse ingredients or leftovers.
 
When should I eat?
When they wake up & leave for work (breakfast options)
when they are at work do they take their lunch away from the desk (lunch options)
when they get home from work and evening routine - workout/kids/sports (dinner options)

SAC Holiday Cooking Demonstration

Seasonal Theme: Healthy Dinner Party Ideas for the Holidays!
November 7th 6 – 8pm
$60 per person / $100 per couple
 
The approaching holiday season can mean a busier social calendar; more dining out, parties and get-togethers with family and friends. If hosting this holiday season, why not learn how to keep you’re dinning vegetarian and healthy? Instead of traditional party fare, be creative and flavorful without all the extra calories!
 
Lead by our nutritionist; Haley Berich R.D., this interactive cooking class (the first in her cooking demo series) will educate and teach how to prepare a unique three-course vegetarian meal you can use in your dinner parties for the holiday season.
  • Learn new vegetarian options/recipes
  • Learn about new foods and how to prepare and cook them
  • Learn about the origin, health benefits and nutrient/caloric values of the foods used
  • Learn where the produce was purchased and receive a shopping list
Enjoy a three course dining experience at end of event

Tips on how to avoid the flu this year!

The flu season will quickly be upon us.  Here are some helpful tips on how to keep the chances of you contacting the seasonal flu low:
 
  1. Wash your hands often.
  2. Work out! This will boost your immune system.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Also, keep a healthy household. Wipe down and sanitize commonly-touched surfaces.
  5. Get enough sleep!
  6. Cover your nose and mouth preferably with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
Reduce stress. Stress can suppress your immune system, so keeping your stress levels low will help lower your chances of getting sick

Winter Jacket Drive supporting Pike Place Market Foundation

Start pulling those un-used winter jackets, gloves, scaves and hats out of the closet in preparation for our 6th annual Winter Jacket Drive! Bring in any style of jacket for men, women, or children and we will make sure they get to the people who need them most!
 
Large bins will be placed in the lobby and by the front desk.

November Fitness Challenge

The start of the holiday season doesn’t have to mean weight gain.  Here at the SAC it means testing your fitness level. Why? Because who doesn’t like a little challenge every now and again. You can test and retest as many times as you want throughout the month.
 
Find a fitness staff member to administer each test:

Tire Flip - how many times can you flip the 250 lb tire in 60 seconds
Weighted Sled - how quickly can you push a sled (men 180 lbs, women 90 lbs) 40 yards down and back?
Treadwall Climb - How long can you keep the wall going (medium speed)
Assault Bike - how quickly can you burn 20 calories

Join one of SAC’s Guided Hikes this Fall. There is plenty of hiking to be had as the seasons change! Enjoy the beauty of the nature, waterfalls and the fall colors while getting a great workout. Fall Hikes are guided by personal trainer; Emily Ring.

SAC Winter Prep & Play Program

Did you spend your summer day dreaming about shredding the powder or getting that gnarly air? 
Do you enjoy cold weather and steep slopes? If you ski, snowboard, snowshoe or cross-country ski, this
8 week program will work to strengthen your ankles, hips, shoulders and core, at the same time, improving your balance and proprioception. It will attempt to improve your endurance needed to sustain you on the slopes or trails.
Better endurance more time on the slopes!
Every Tuesday/Thursday 12 - 1PM

RESOLUTION RUN 5K & Polar Bear Dive!

Cost $35 (until 12/1 when registration increases)
Why not do something fun and active to celebrate New Year’s Day!! Gather some friends and family and participate in the SAC Resolution Run 5k (and maybe a polar bear dive in the lake!).
 
Run or walk the 5K race that has an optional dip into Lake Washington just prior to the event finish line.
Can you say refreshed? It will definitely be something you’ll never forget!
 
Stay for the post-race celebration and a beer garden for those over 21.
Free chili, coffee, hot chocolate and more will be provided.

12K’s of Christmas Holiday Run

The 12K's of Christmas Holiday Run is a 12K run/walk, a 5K run/walk, a free 1K kid’s dash.
This popular annual holiday themed road race is all sorts of awesome Christmas spirit, and a great day out racing! The course begins and ends in historic Heritage Park and follows scenic Cross Kirkland Corridor trail for part of both the routes.
 
Run or walk both distance and enjoy the post-event celebration including free food, music, a free photo wall and a holiday costume contest. This year's event will have over 25 sponsor/exhibitor booths onsite. Be sure to visit the retail corridor of downtown Kirkland after the event for some last minute holiday shopping.

Seattle Urban Squash

New Scholars & Team Van
We’re thrilled to welcome new SUS scholars just in time to kick off the squash season. We’re also happy to share that we were able to buy a new team van with a $10,000 grant from a Movement Mortgage, a contribution from Jan-Pro Cleaning, as well as thousands of dollars in individual contributions. We have financed the last $4,000 at 0% and are still working to get that funded through individual contributions. You can give to this cause here today. Here’s to an exciting season ahead!
 
Take a Scholar Under Your Wing
During the winter months, you’ll have the opportunity to “Take a Scholar Under Your Wing” and help provide him or her with the winter clothes they need. More information to come soon, but please contact Kate Frost at kate.frost@seattlesquash.org if you are interested in participating.
