Inspirational Member of the Month

Daphne Abbott
Our Inspirational Member of the Month is by far the cutest! Daphne told us a bit about herself and why she likes to come to the Club - pretty much sums why she's such an inspiration! In her own words:

"My name is Daphne Abbott. I just turned 4 on March 11th. I loooove to swim. It’s one of my favorite things - in fact I ask Mom everyday if I can go swimming. It turns out that’s a great thing, because my Mom had stage 4 breast cancer last year and a bunch of surgeries - so swimming is helping her heal.Since I’m always (I mean always) asking to go swimming we have been in the pool a lot this winter. I can swim underwater now for 25 seconds, blow bubbles, and I’m well on my way to mermaidhood. My mom now has full range of motion again in her arm and she’s cancer free. Both a big deal - but I just want to go swimming again. Can we go today? Please?"

You're welcome to swim in our pool anytime, Daphne! Congratulations to this little fish!

Employee of the Month

Lizzie Clauss
Congratulations to Lizzie Clauss for being voted as our Employee of the Month! Since 2013 Lizzie has contributed so much to the Seattle Athletic Club team. With her upbeat and optimistic personality she has been a great fit here at the SAC. Lizzie always looks to help wherever she can; from the Sports Desk to singing at our Member Holiday Party to more recently helping out in the Café. Throughout her time at the SAC Lizzie has made many great friends. She never passes up the opportunity for a friendly talk with whoever may be passing by the Desk.

Lizzie has been a working musician since she was 16 years old. She has a background in performing arts and theater, and continues to keep herself busy in the Seattle music scene. Lizzie studied at Evergreen State College and graduated in 2012.

Thank you Lizzie for all of your hard work!

Pilates for Swimming

Swim with better control and faster times – without straining your body.

For swimmers, proper body alignment is critical. Swimmers need to work with the water and the slightest misalignment can cause them to work against it. Much of a swimmer’s training, however, focuses on working the global muscles – or the outside musculature system. It does not work the inside 'stabilizing' system. This bilateral imbalance leaves a swimmer open to misalignments which make certain parts of the body work harder than they should. That can add seconds to a competitive time or – even worse – to a variety of tears, pulls or strains.

Why Pilates?

Pilates exercises focus on strengthening this inner support system which consists of the deep abdominal muscles, and the muscles closest to the spine. The exercises develop core control by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle. Pilates can teach swimmers how to activate their inner support system to attain maximum balance and alignment as well as correct muscle "firing" patterns. This means the muscles activate when they should, within the dynamic of a particular movement.

Swimmers will also see stronger stomach muscles, which are the base of all their movements. For a swimmer a strong core will keep scapula, shoulders, pelvis and spine balanced and aligned so that they can lift their arms up and out of the water without the usual straining of the neck muscles, leading to less overall wear and tear on the body and a faster swim. In addition, Pilates exercises are performed at a deliberate pace, with proper mind-body control. This approach translates well to the pool, where many swimmers need to concentrate less on how far they have gone and more on breathing, body orientation and balance for a steadier race.

Performance Benefits:

  • Muscles fire correctly leading to more fluid movement
  • Body is aligned, leading to less strain on the neck
  • Proper mind body control leads to a steadier, faster pace
  • All of the above equal faster times without the wear & tear

July Film Night: The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming (1966)

Wednesday, July 3rd │ 7:00-9:00 pm
Members: Complimentary │Non-Members: Standard Guest Fee
It is difficult to believe that this wonderfully zany film started out life as a novel by Nathaniel Benchley (OK so he is not famous). Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, Moonstruck) directs this send up of Cold War tensions that includes Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint, Alan Arkan, Brian Keith, and Jonathan Winters. A Russian submarine gets stuck on an island in Massachusetts and group of sailors go on land to find a motorboat to release their vessel. Eventually the small town locals discover the identity of the men and panic ensues. The film’s tagline says it all: “It’s a plot to make the world die laughing.” Will you join us for the final film in our “Back to the Future: The Cold War Revisited” series? Don’t say Nyet! Dasvidaniya, Comrade!
Enjoy complimentary appetizers and wine during the film, as well as post-film discussion with film buff, Jim Clauss.
