This Friday Morning...
Cops on a Rooftop Benefits Illinois Special Olympics

Friday Morning, May 18 from 5 to 9 a.m. at Dunkin' Donuts!
Enjoy a sweet treat as you support the important programs provided by Illinois Special Olympics. Members of the Vernon Hills Police Department will be on hand to collect your donations early on Friday, May 18 from 5 to 9 a.m. at Dunkin' Donuts on the corner of Routes 60 and 21. Donations earn you donuts, travel mugs – and even the opportunity to earn a "donut drop." Officers on the roof will attempt to drop munchkin donuts into the mouths of cops waiting on the ground. As Chief Kreis says, "Good cheap fun!" VHPD has long supported Illinois Special Olympics – over the past ten years this event has raised nearly $16,000 for the cause. Thank you to Dunkin' Donuts and to the community for supporting this effort.

National Police Week/Police Officer's Memorial Day...
The Village joins with the nation in recognizing the week of May 13 as Police Week. VHPD was recently honored with a proclamation.

Village Enacts Food & Beverage Tax

As part of the effort to create the FY 2018-19 Village Budget, staff and trustees worked to identify new revenue sources. The Village is largely funded through sales tax revenue; the Village does not collect a property tax. On April 17, Trustees approved a new Home Rule Food and Beverage Tax. The 1 percent tax will apply to the purchase price of prepared food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks prepared for immediate consumption, and alcoholic beverages sold for consumption off premises. The tax will take effect September 1. Details are available on the Food & Beverage Tax webpage. Budget documents and other supporting materials are posted on the Village's Financial Documents webpage.

VILLAGE BOARD BUSINESS

Next Village Board Meetings:
June 5, June 19, July 3 and July 17

  • The full 2018 Meeting Schedule is available on the Meeting Schedules webpage.
  • Meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are held at Village Hall, 290 Evergreen Drive at Route 45 unless otherwise noted.
  • Residents are encouraged to attend meetings, as well as view them on the Village YouTube Channel and on Cable Access. Agendas and minutes are posted online.

A Few Items of Interest...

  • Short-term Residential Rentals Prohibited: Village Trustees approved clarification to ordinances prohibiting short-term residential rentals of less than 12 months. (5-15-18 Board Meeting)
  • Route 45 Improvements: Representatives from Illinois Department of Transportation presented an update on proposed capacity enhancements for Route 45 from Route 60 to Route 22. Improvements include additional lanes, improved traffic signals and lighting, and accommodations for bikes and pedestrians. IDOT is finalizing plans for the project, estimated at $73 million, which moves it closer to the bid process. That said, the project is not yet included on IDOT's 5-Year Construction Schedule. (4-17-2018 Board Meeting
  • Century Park Expansion: Vernon Hills Park District Executive Director Jeff Fougerousse presented plans for expanding and improving the south end of Century Park. Work includes eliminating the existing basketball court/stage area, building a new stage area further south to accommodate more attendees, raising the stage up for better viewing, improving paths and lighting, and constructing a public restroom. Work is expected to start late this summer after Lil' Bear Ribfest (August 17 and 18). The Park District was granted a fee waiver for the project. (4-17-2018 Board Meeting)
  • Disbanding Seavey Drainage District: Lake County Chairman Aaron Lawlor addressed Trustees to update them on progress of Illinois Senate Bill 2459, which allows the Lake County Board to eliminate no-longer-necessary governmental committees. Trustees expressed support for Vernon Hills, Mundelein and Libertyville formally taking responsibility for their own sections of this important waterway – which these communities have been actually been doing for some time.  (5-15-18 Board Meeting)
  • Village Hall Meeting Rooms: Public meeting space will be available soon at the Village Hall. Remodeling work is nearly complete and staff is working on procedures for reserving space. Note that the Laschen Center is closed, with the Village planning to demolish the site later this year.
  • Midway/Lindon Lane Road Rehab: The resurfacing project is ahead of schedule. Updates are available on the Annual Road Rehabilitation Project webpage.
  • Pet Clinic Recap: Trustees thanked those involved in bringing this year's Pet Vaccination/Microchip Clinic to Vernon Hills on April 28. The event provided 293 dogs and 36 cats with low-cost services. (5-15-18 Board Meeting)
  • Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors: Jeff Ohm of Icon Construction addressed the Board on behalf of Ernie's First Annual Truck Night, planned for June 21 at Ernie's Auto & Truck Center. Proceeds will support the Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors Foundation. Mr. Ohm noted that Icon Building Group was completing work on a home in Long Grove with proceeds also going toward the foundation. (5-15-18 Board Meeting)
  • Long-time Trustee Cindy Hebda has announced that she is preparing to move to Indiana at some point, at which time she will vacate her seat.
  • Finance Director Nikki Larson has announced her resignation. She will be taking the same position with the Village of Glencoe. On behalf of the Village, thank you and best wishes.
  • Public Works Week: Trustees thanked the staff of the Vernon Hills Public Works Department and honored them by proclaiming May 20 to 26 as Public Works Week. (5-15-18 Board Meeting)
  • Blackboard Connect Emergency Notifications: Trustees encourage residents to enroll in the Village's reverse 911 emergency call system called Blackboard Connect, which is used to notify resident's of urgent or emergency information. Published landlines are included in the database. However, residents are encouraged to create an account and enroll their cell phones or other pertinent contact information. Sign up at Blackboard Connect or through the Notify Me link at the bottom of each Village webpage.
