"While supplies last" so line up early. Free concert by Kaleidoscope Eyes set for 7 p.m.. Free hay rides from 4 to 10 p.m. sponsored by the VH Park District. The most important feature? Our participating non-profit groups who will sell a variety of food items (pie, pizza, corn...), with all proceeds supporting their efforts. More information on the Village Oktoberfest webpage.

More information is posted on the American Legion news item.

Be Alert! It's Back-to-School Time

School's Open Safety Week – August 20-24

With many local schools already in session, the Vernon Hills Police Department urges that we all use extra caution when traveling through Vernon Hills and all communities. Please make note of the bus stops, crossing guards and school zones where ever you drive – and remember that the school zone speed limit is 20 mph. Avoid using your cell phone – remember with few exceptions it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving. Even if you use hands-free, if you are talking or texting you are not giving your full attention to your surroundings. More information is available at and on the School's Open media release.

Note Next Village Board Meetings:
Wednesday, September 5 and Monday, September 17

  • Please note that due to the Labor Day and Yom Kippur holidays, upcoming Village Board meetings will be held on Wednesday, September 5 and Monday, September 17, instead of on the usual Tuesday schedule.
  • The full 2018 Meeting Schedule is available on the Meeting Schedules webpage.
  • Meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are held at Village Hall, 290 Evergreen Drive at Route 45 unless otherwise noted.
  • Residents are encouraged to attend meetings, as well as view them on the Village YouTube Channel and on Cable Access. Agendas and minutes are posted online.

A Few Items of Interest...

  • Village Food/Beverage Tax: The 1 percent municipal food and beverage tax will take effect on September 1. This tax is designed to help support Village services, in light of a changing retail environment. Note that the Village of Vernon Hills does not collect a property tax. More information is posted on the Village Food & Beverage Tax webpages.
  • Finance Department Tasks and Outsourcing Option: The Board supported the widening of scope for current finance and accounting contractor Lauterbach and Amen for the next six months. Given the resignation of several Village  Finance Department staff, Trustees believe that outsourcing is the most effective option at this time. (7-17-2018 Board Meeting)
  • Vernon Hills Energy Farm: VHHS students Jack and Devon Mulcrone presented ideas for developing an energy farm at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Aspects included vertical wind turbines, solar panels, and composting restroom facilities as well as an educational center. Trustees expressed interest and encouragement.  (7-17-2018 Board Meeting)
  • Foxconn/Upstream Development: Trustees voiced concerns about the environmental impact of the massive Foxconn manufacturing facility moving forward in southeastern Wisconsin. The main concern for many Illinois communities is Wisconsin's waiving of environmental restrictions allowing infill of upstream wetlands, which is expected to exacerbate downstream flooding in communities along the Des Plaines river system. Trustees unanimously support enforcement of environmental regulations related to Foxconn/upstream development.  (8-14-2018 Board Meeting, which will be posted on the YouTube Board Meeting page shortly)
  • Route 60/21 Complete: Public Works Director David Brown announced that road work for the intersection of Townline and Milwaukee Roads is substantially complete, nicely ahead of schedule.
  • Metra Station Project: Metra will be replacing the existing paver platform with a stamped asphalt surface. Work is expected to be complete before Labor Day. (Metra Station Construction)
  • PADS Community Summit:  Stephen Love, Director of Development for the PADS Lake County homeless initiative, invited community leaders to attend a Community Summit planned for September 12 from 8 a.m. to noon at the College of Lake County.
  • Peyton Newman Honored: On August 14, the Board recognized Peyton Newman for her achievement of winning the title of Miss Chicago's Outstanding Teen 2018 and Miss Illinois' Outstanding Teen, as well as her success in the national competition. She will continue to reach out into the community through her My Voice program, calling for volunteerism among young people.
  • Tom Brettmann Retirement: Also on August 14, the Board formally thanked Thomas R. Brettmann for his 22 years of service, where he was instrumental in supporting our Village through his vast knowledge, covering everything from engineering technique and storm water management to sustainable planting. Thank you and best wishes in your retirement, Tom.
  • Thank You, Volunteers: Trustees join with the community in thanking the volunteers who create our many Village-sponsored special events, including 4th of July Parade and Concert, Summer Celebration, and National Night Out. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Village Hall at 847-367-3700.
The above artwork was taken from a recent board presentation, which shows an artist's rendering of a possible wind/solar learning center proposed by Jack and Devon Mulcrone for the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. The full proposal was provided during the July 17 Board Meeting and may be viewed online.  (7-17-2018 Board Meeting)
