Rain Report...

Stormwater Management System Performed Well

Vernon Hills and the surrounding region received a substantial rainfall leading up to and including the Labor Day weekend. In fact, the countywide average was 4.3 inches.

The Vernon Hills Public Works Department reports that the Village's stormwater management system was able to keep up with the heavy rainfalls. Public Works and other Village personnel checked problematic areas in advance of the recent storms, and continued to monitor the situation during the rains as well as after – water levels continue to rise well after the rain stops as stormwater moves into our area from the north.

Public Works Director David Brown attributes our Village's ability to absorb and pass through massive amounts of stormwater to good planning. Our system includes requiring homes to be elevated above floodplain elevations; designing overflow routes between residences and commercial buildings as well as along roadways; and storing floodwaters in our system of active detention ponds as well as passive detention areas that otherwise serve as parks, green spaces, and river/lake shore lines. During the recent storms, staff observed that our parks and buffers received substantial overflow stormwaters, just as intended, and were pleased that these areas functioned as planned.

Foxconn/Upstream Development Concerns: In a related note, during the August 14 Board Meeting, Trustees voiced concerns about the environmental impact of the massive Foxconn manufacturing facility moving forward in southeastern Wisconsin. The main concern for many Illinois communities is Wisconsin's waiving of environmental restrictions allowing infill of upstream wetlands, which is expected to exacerbate downstream flooding in communities along the Des Plaines river system – including Vernon Hills. Trustees unanimously support enforcement of environmental regulations related to Foxconn/upstream development.  (8-14-2018 Board Meeting

A Few Items of Interest...

  • Support for Addiction: Trustees and staff discussed the importance of providing appropriate support for those struggling with addictions. Police Chief Patrick Kreis noted that individuals looking for help may come to the VHPD. The department will work to find treatment options as well as dispose of drugs and paraphernalia – providing help, not prosecution. Trustees, staff and community members have continued to be involved with a variety of health-related issues and organizations, including the local Stand Strong Coalition, which offers a variety of resources. On a related note, Chief Kreis reported that officers have used Narcan/Naloxone to revive seven distressed individuals since officers began carrying the opioid reversal medication. (9-6-2018 Board Meeting)
  • American Legion Marker Dedication/100th Anniversary: Vernon Post 1247 representatives John Taylor and Craig Warner invited the community to celebrate the dedication of a historical marker detailing the history of the World War II era Navy auxiliary airfield that existed on the site of the current Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. The ceremony will be held Friday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the northeast corner of the VHHS stadium. This event marks just one event the Vernon Post has in store as members observe the 100th anniversary of the American Legion. (9-5-2018 Board Meeting) (American Legion website)
  • Public Works Seasonal Openings: The Village of Vernon Hills Public Works Department has openings for seasonal work, beginning November 5. Information and applications are available online.

Work is primarily in the Gregg's Landing subdivision. Info on the Village website or directly from Northshore Gas.
  • ComEd Trimming: ComEd will have a contractor clearing tree limbs and vegetation along overhead power lines around the Village through November. Main trimming routes include Route 45 on each side of Fairway Drive/Buffalo Grove Road, south down Buffalo Grove Road to Port Clinton, and along the former EJ&E railroad tracks south of Gregg's Landing. More information is posted on the Village website.
  • Thank You: The Village joins with Vernon Hill High School in thanking everyone who worked to make the Chicago Bears Football Practice and Family Night a great success. Thank you to VHPD, Public Works, VHHS (especially Ms. Kathy Catanzaro), Explorer Scouts, Lake County Sheriff, firefighters, first responders, boosters and the many more volunteers who helped create such a fun, festive atmosphere.

Hawthorn Mall representatives tell us that our mega-mall officially opened on September 10, 1973. Happy Anniversary! Below is a picture from that era, taken from above Big Bear Lake and looking south to the mall on the left and New Century Town on the right. The Deerpath subdivision as well as the triangular shaped runways for the Nike Site (now the the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex) are at the upper right. And that was about all there was to Vernon Hills in those days!
