Memorial Day Remembrances

As Memorial Day weekend is upon us, we take a moment to remember the reason for the holiday – which is a remembrance for those who have died in service to this nation. Memorial Day was first marked to honor the many lives lost in the Civil War. More information is available at

Local Ceremonies on Monday, May 31

American Legion Post 1247 will salute US Armed Forces Veterans with Memorial Day Ceremonies on Monday, May 31, at the following locations:

Ceremonies will be respectful, but brief. Social distancing will be observed.

Volunteer for Flag Placement

Additionally, Post 1247 will be placing flags on Veterans' graves in anticipation of Memorial Day at the above mentioned cemeteries. Volunteers from the public are invited to join with Post members on Friday, May 28 at 10 a.m. at Vernon Township Cemetery and Saturday, May 29 at 9 a.m. at Willow Lawn Memorial Park to assist with the placement of flags.

Holiday Schedule

Please note that Memorial Day, May 31, is a federal holiday. Many businesses and organizations (including Village Hall and Public Works) will be closed that day. Services such as garbage collection will be adjusted to one day later.

Wear Orange Day

Recognizing those impacted by gun violence

The goal of Wear Orange Day is to raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors. Organizers point out that every day, more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence, and more than 230 Americans are shot and wounded. Americans are 25 times more likely to die by gun homicide than people in other high-income countries. To learn more, visit
