Memorial Day Remembrances

As Memorial Day weekend is upon us, we take a moment to remember the reason for the holiday – which is a remembrance for those who have died in service to this nation. Memorial Day was first marked to honor the many lives lost in the Civil War. More information is available at usmemorialday.org.

Local Ceremonies on Monday, May 31

American Legion Post 1247 will salute US Armed Forces Veterans with Memorial Day Ceremonies on Monday, May 31, at the following locations:

Ceremonies will be respectful, but brief. Social distancing will be observed.

Volunteer for Flag Placement

Additionally, Post 1247 will be placing flags on Veterans' graves in anticipation of Memorial Day at the above mentioned cemeteries. Volunteers from the public are invited to join with Post members on Friday, May 28 at 10 a.m. at Vernon Township Cemetery and Saturday, May 29 at 9 a.m. at Willow Lawn Memorial Park to assist with the placement of flags.

Holiday Schedule

Please note that Memorial Day, May 31, is a federal holiday. Many businesses and organizations (including Village Hall and Public Works) will be closed that day. Services such as garbage collection will be adjusted to one day later.

June 4

Wear Orange Day

Recognizing those impacted by gun violence

During the June 1 Village Board Meeting, Trustees expect to approve a Proclamation marking June 4 as Wear Orange Day for National Gun Violence Awareness. The goal of Wear Orange Day is to raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors. Organizers point out that every day, more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence, and more than 230 Americans are shot and wounded. Americans are 25 times more likely to die by gun homicide than people in other high-income countries. To learn more, visit WearOrange.org.

Road Rehab Reminder

Residents and those driving through the Village are reminded that the 2021 Road Rehab Project is underway on the following streets: Cherry Valley Road from Lakeside to Oakwood, and between Oakwood and Westmoreland; Richard Court; Court of Ash; Court of Elm; Greenbrier Lane; Lakeside Drive between Westmoreland and Cherry Valley; Westmoreland Drive between Lakeside Drive and Cherry Valley Road; Greenleaf Drive; Indianwood Drive; and West End Lane.

Please use extra care when traveling in this area as delays are expected and workers or flaggers may be present. Work is expected to be substantially complete by early July. For more information about the Village Road Rehab Project, including a Project Map and weekly project updates, check the Annual Road Rehabilitation Project web article.

Since this is Roadwork Season, there are also lots of projects around the region, including Route 83 between Rt 45 and Buffalo Grove Road, Route 45 in Mundelein from Division to Courtland St., Route 176 between St. Mary's Road and Milwaukee Avenue for bridge replacement, and Buffalo Grove Road from Route 22 to Deerfield Parkway. A great resource to keep an eye on construction delays is LakeCountyPassage.com.

Next Chapter for Hawthorn Mall
Centennial Founder and CEO Steven Levin thanked the Village Board and community for partnering in the redevelopment of Hawthorn Mall. Mr. Levin presented the Board with several bricks from the now-demolished Sears, which served as the cornerstone for Hawthorn Mall for more than 40 years, and a gold shovel, which was used during the March ground breaking ceremony for Hawthorn 2.0 and which represents the next 40 years.  (Vernon Hills Village Board Meeting - 5/18/21)
