Dr. Christie Cavanaugh (SES) Selected by UNC System for Literacy Fellows Program
Congratulations to Dr. Christie Cavanaugh, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Specialized Education Services (SES), who has been selected as one of eight Literacy Fellows as part of the UNC System Literacy Framework Development Initiative. The goal is to develop a common framework for literacy instruction, to be adopted by all educator preparation programs in the UNC System. Read more.
Moss Street Partnership School (MSPS) Awarded Grant for Outdoor Learning Trail
MSPS was awarded a $15,000 NC Schools Go Outside (GO) Grant to build an on-campus learning center in the form of a half-mile learning trail. Construction on the trail began in early November, and MSPS students will help name the trail, create a logo, and create a trail map and guide. MSPS is operated by UNCG in partnership with Rockingham County Schools. Read more.
Virtual Town Halls with Dean Randy Penfield Inform & Engage SOE Education Champions
Earlier this fall, Dean Randy Penfield and Associate Dean Jewell Cooper hosted a series of three virtual SOE Town Halls designed to give participants an in-depth look at how the SOE has dealt with the many challenges this year has presented us. More than 60 people joined these meetings via Zoom to talk about our response to the pandemic, racial equity, and our commitment to making progress in these areas. Read more.
Dr. William W. Purkey, Emeritus Professor of Counselor Education at SOE, Co-Authors New Book
Dr. William W. Purkey, Emeritus Professor of Counselor Education, has co-authored a new book with John Novak and Joan Fretz entitled Developing Inviting Schools: A Beneficial Framework for Teachers and Leaders. During his three decades of teaching in the SOE, Dr. Purkey received both the UNCG Alumni Teaching Award and the NC Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas, ELC Alum, Interviewed by Sports Illustrated on How Racism Protests Have Changed College Sports
Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas, ELC alumnus and Associate Professor of Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis at the University of Missouri-Columbia, was recently featured on CNN Sports Illustrated’s Daily Cover. In the story and video, Dr. Douglas speaks about how the Missouri football protest changed college sports forever. Read and watch here.
Dr. Leslie Locklear, ELC Alum, Publishes Children's Book Highlighting Lumbee Culture
Released as the first in a Lumbee Children’s Book Series, authors Dr. Leslie Locklear and Christina Pacheco published a new book: It’s Lumbee Homecoming Y’all! Dr. Locklear received her Ph.D in Educational Studies from UNCG in 2017, and both authors are members of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The book was illustrated by Raven Dial-Stanley (UNCG CARS senior). Learn more.
