Known By Heart Poetry–November News
Free writing workshops for older adults
In partnership with Hamline Midway Elders and Hamline Midway Branch Library in Saint Paul:
Building Blocks of Poetry
Explore the theme of home through poetry. We’ll share poems that explore house and home and also learn some basic craft choices —from playing with sound and writing from the five senses to learning about line.  You can leave with ideas for continuing writing on your own. Whether you’re new to poetry or have a lifetime of experience, you are welcome to join this session.
November 2, 1-3PM

Haiku and Other Short Poetry
Curious about writing short poems? Come learn about haiku, tanka and the possibilities of short short poems. Haiku and many other short poems can be both art form and a practice that helps us be mindful of the world around us. You’ll get to try your hand at several short forms and leave with options for further exploration on your own. Open to all experience levels; familiarity with poetry a plus.

And check out this poem by Donte Collins, I think it’s one we should all know by heart.
Wednesday, November 16: Known By Heart Reading, 7pm
St. Anthony Park Library
2245 Como Ave
St Paul, MN 55108

Naomi Cohn, Zoë Bird and David Mura presented by Known By Heart and Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library.
What does it mean to know something by heart?  We’re saying we care about something enough to remember it and carry it around with us wherever we go. Join poet/performers Zoë Bird, David Mura and Naomi Cohn as they answer this question in poetry and conversation. Hear poems presented from the heart and join in a conversation about poetry and the things we value enough to remember.

Writing Home Update
Current workshops wrap-up in November. Over the winter months we’ll be focusing on:

Getting to know elders connected to Episcopal Homes and Saint Anthony Park Area Seniors

Developing Home Delivered: writing experiences for home-bound older adults delivered through Keystone Community Services Meals on Wheels Program.

Partnering with Independent Filmmaker Project Minnesota: Known by Heart is excited to be teaming up with IFP to connect older adults and young filmmakers.  It’s ultimately up to the young artists whether they get involved in documenting Known by Heart’s work or co-create video poems with elders, but it’s an honor to be working with IFP.
