Principal Waage's March Community Letter

  March 1, 2020

Dear Little Family,

Spring is a time for new great beginnings, fresh starts, and celebration of growth.  As we have had a busy couple of months bunkered down in the cold, we know that the seeds of their learning have been germinating and now we get to see the amazing growth as it comes bursting through.  In these upcoming months, our kiddos will be showing a lot of growth academically, emotionally, and physically!

March and April are the time of year where our students’ academic growth is measured through standardized assessments.  The CMAS (Grades 3-5) and MAP (Grades K-5) assessments help us to evaluate students’ growth over time.  The CMAS assessment is also used for our state accountability.  We will be focusing on preparing students to show their best efforts on these assessments, but there are a few things that you can do to support them at home!  Please remind your kids of the following items:

  • The test helps us to see their personal best.  They are not competing with others, only working their hardest to show their own growth.
  • When they get frustrated, it is important to take a deep breath and read the question again.
  • The best test prep is a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast.
  • Encourage them to believe in themselves.  Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, either way, you are right.”  Self-confidence goes a long way!
  • Have them practice at home!  (or if you are just curious about what the test looks like, you can have fun trying sample items, too! J)  Practice tests for CMAS are available on the Colorado Department of Education Website!

As our kids’ minds are growing, so are their bodies!  We find that students’ appetites are increasing and they are inching taller every day!  Learning can often be difficult for students who may be a little extra hungry on a given day.  If you are interested in contributing community snacks that align with the healthy school guidelines to help feed classmates who could use an extra snack, contact your child’s classroom teacher directly.  If your child is growing like a weed, consider stopping by our resource room and trade out clothes they may have outgrown and/or find some new items to fit their growing bodies.  And always remember that we understand how expensive it can be to feed growing kiddos.  Our food pantry is always open!

At any time, if you have concerns or questions on how we can work together to support your child’s growth, please reach out!

All my best,

We have a new after school class that just started in February.  Kytriena Payseno kindly did a free class for kids here at Little during our RISE night, and the kids really loved it!  I know a lot of parents have been expressing how much they would love drama/theater back here at Little, and this is a great opportunity!  LINK

The other activity we had on RISE night was provided by DOJO SOURCE Martial Arts, Women's Self Defense and Fitness. Walker Chipman did a fantastic job for the entire 2 hours!   LINK
