Hey Decent Work and Health Network!

We hope you had a restful break and a great start to 2019. 

As you know, Bill 47 came into effect on January 1, 2019. We know that Bill 47 was passed despite overwhelming public opposition and without consultation from the Ministry of HealthOver 77% of Ontarians (including 64% of Conservative voters) oppose the provincial government’s decision to eliminate paid sick days. Over 66% of Ontarians (including 62% of small businesses) support a $15 minimum wage. Moreover, the Canadian Medical Association and the Ontario Medical Association have advocated against the reinstatement of sick notes for short-term absences. 

On the same day (January 1, 2019) almost 900,000 federally-regulated workers across Canada earned the legislated right to 3 paid sick days; to equal pay for equal work for part-time, contract, and temporary workers; and to protections against contract flipping. There is no doubt that the Federal government took important first steps towards legislating $15 & Fairness, after seeing the incredible levels of public support our decent work movement generated for these very rights in Ontario.
