Updates and Ongoing Action

  • May 30 Press Conference at Queen's Park: The Decent Work and Health Network joined other groups, including $15 and Fairness and Workers' Action Centre, for the government's announcement of Bill 148: Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs, 2017. You can read about how the legislation aligns with the demands of the $15 and Fairness campaign here. (Photo above)
  • June 8 Press Event at Women's College Hospital: Dr. Hasan Sheikh and Mariam Naguib of the Decent Work and Health Network attended a press event at Women's College Hospital in Toronto. Kevin Flynn, Minister of Labour, and Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, discussed the health aspects of Bill 148, including the elimination of sick notes, a measure that has been well received. (Photo below, right)
  • Participation in Committee Hearings: We are coordinating the participation of health providers in July's committee hearings on the proposed legislation. The hearings are an opportunity to voice our support for health-promoting aspects of the new policy and to call for increased protections where the policy doesn't go far enough.

Advocacy: Continued calls to MPPs

We ask that you continue to email and call your MPP to express your support for
  • The $15 minimum wage
  • The extension of 10 days of personal emergency leave (PEL), including two paid days, to all workers
  • The elimination of sick notes
And for
  • Increasing the number of paid personal emergency leave days to seven
The big business lobby is pushing the government to walk back many parts of the new legislation, including the $15 minimum wage, so we need to make our stance clear: these changes are good for Ontario's health! Let us know when you call or email.
On June 8, 2017, Mariam and Hasan of the Decent Work and Health Network attended a press event at Women's College Hospital with Hon Kevin Flynn and Hon Dr. Eric Hoskins.
