The Alphabet // November Edition
Happy Humpday humans! (How's that for an aliteration?)
What a month it's been! There has been a plethora of great releases in the past 30 days and it's been a pleasure getting to sort through it all. November seems to be the month to drop albums, and I can kind of see why. As it gets darker all you want to do is sit in your apartment with a bottle of wine and listen to some tunes - or is that just me?
To much fanfare, A Tribe Called Quest dropped their first album in 18 years. This was an emotional release not just due to the recent and tragic death of Phife Dawg, but also because of its subject matter. Tribe has always found their sweetspot at the intersection of quality beats and thoughtful commentary. Only they have the musical clout to drop an album where one of the most vibing tracks is one about how racist and sexist we all are. I've listened to the album from start to finish about 12 times, and each time I find some new nugget or one-liner that gets me thinking. For these reasons, and many more, I have chosen We got it from Here...Thank You 4 Your service as the album of the month.
Now, onto the actual playlist I have curated for you. Truth be told, it's taken a lot for me to get through this month. But, I take solace in the fact that music always has a way of getting us through, no matter how lost we may find ourselves. If you need a pick-me-up, start with Chris Malinchak's "Wonderful". If you're pining for a good cry, Sundara Karma won't steer you wrong. But if you just want a good laugh, check out Pussy Riot's "Make America Great Again". Hopefully it's the last time you will hear that phrase.
Lastly, as an homage to the late Leonard Cohen, I included one of my favorite songs of his: "So Long, Marianne". Because sometimes you have to pay tribute to the greats.
So long, Leonard.
