A Big Step towards NYC Waste Equity!
New York City Council led by CM Reynoso and CM Levin yesterday enacted Waste Equity Bill - Intro 157 - limiting trash sent to three overburdened neighborhoods with a majority of privately-owned, waste transfer stations which together process 75 percent of the city's trash.
The legislation cuts permitted capacity of waste transfer stations by 50% in north Brooklyn and 33% in the South Bronx and southeast Queens at the 26 waste transfer stations out of 38 citywide are located in these three neighborhoods. Waste comes in from all around the city is transferred to long haul trucks and rail for shipment to out-of-city landfills and incinerators, as well as recycling and composting facilities. The waste equity bill will reduce the truck traffic and air and noise pollution in these neighborhoods. See more on the story at Streetsblog and NRDC and City Limits.
