Let's Ban Plastic Shopping Bags in NY

Each year, nearly 23 billion single-use plastic bags are used in New York State!!  Plastic bags make their way into our local waterways, harming wildlife and the environment.  Plastic bags are just wasteful - 40% of plastic made is used once and discarded.

Research by Riverkeeper and Columbia University found microplastic particles in waters across the New York metro area. Microplastic particles were found in the digestive tract of shrimp, oysters, clams, and other species as microplastics are often mistaken by wildlife for food.

State Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblyman Steve Englebright introduced Senate Bill S7760 and Assembly Bill A9953 banning single-use plastic shopping bags and placing a 10-cent fee on paper. The fee will help fund state parks, environmental programs, and free reusable bags for low income New Yorkers.  The fee on paper bags is needed to reduce waste and encourage reusable bags.

Los Angeles had a 94% decline in plastic bag usage and a 30% reduction in paper bag usage after a ban on plastic and a 10-cent fee on paper. Plastic bag policy in the United Kingdom led to a 30% reduction in plastic bag pollution on the floor of the North Sea.  Let's ban plastic bags in NY!
