VOLUNTEERS, WE NEED YOU!
Now that Spring is really here, the NYC Compost Project Hosted by Big Reuse needs your help! Volunteering
is a great way to give back to the community and meet new people. Our program has been collecting food scraps and creating compost since 2010. In 2017, we composted over one million pounds of organic waste slated for the landfill and used it to green NYC. We couldn't do it without volunteers!
We support school and community gardens, parks, street tree stewards and more with free locally made compost. Volunteers help bag compost for distribution, connecting city stewards with valuable organic matter and beneficial micro-organisms for their community greening projects. In addition to this critical work, volunteers get a chance to visit our Queensbridge Community Composting site, check out our operations
, and make the compost connection
to sign up for 3pm on Wednesdays throughout the summer!
LOOK OUT FOR THE BIRDS!
Big Reuse is happy to support artist Nicholas Holiber and the Audubon Sculpture Project in creation of twelve much-larger-than life sculptures of imperiled birds out of reclaimed/recycled wood from BIG Reuse!
This ambitious public-art initiative will draw attention to the plight of birds threatened by climate change while simultaneously bringing beauty to the urban landscape. From April to December 2019, all twelve sculptures will be displayed in prominent locations along the Broadway Mall, stretching from 64th Street north to 166th Street in Manhattan. Each sculpture will be accompanied by information about the bird, the threats it faces, and what concerned passersby can do to help.
Holiber developed the Audubon Sculpture Project in partnership with New York City Audubon, Broadway Mall Association, New York City Parks Department, and Gitler &_____ Gallery. To learn more about the project visit AudubonSculptureProject.com
