Farm Update
Hello friends,
2018 was sooo crazy! We added a new baby to our family, totaling 4 kids 6 years old and under, designed for more weddings than ever, planned on growing more flowers than ever, had speaking engagements, learned from a seasoned flower growing veteran and encouraged fellow flower growers along the way. It was wonderful and exhausting. I didn't anticipate how much Huck (our 4th child) would change our schedules and routines and affect my energy level. Silly me. I should have known better than to think I could keep going at the pace I planned and have a baby. He caused me to slow down. I cut way back on sending updates and posting on social media and pulling weeds. If it wasn't for Molly who I hired April-July and Robyn a fellow grower who helped me fill orders, and my dearest husband who was with me every step of the way, Scenic Blooms would have ceased to exist. Thank you guys! Thanks also to all of my customers and friends who bought and supported local flowers in 2018.
We're only a month into the new year and flowers are already growing in my hoop house. The first flush of ranunculus will be blooming in a month or so. I can't wait! Can you?
Here's to the New Year and new flowers!!!

Baby ranunculus are sprouting roots in the hoop house.
Get your Valentine a Subscription with a complementary card!
Include your Valentine's address in the comment form and they will receive a beautiful card via snail mail for Valentine's Day. The card explains the subscription and can include a custom note. Just include that in the comment form as well.

Pre-Paying for a bouquet subscription helps me plan and prepare for the upcoming season. It is a CSA - “Community Shared Agriculture” where you buy your flowers directly from the farmer as opposed to a retailer. This method benefits you in freshness as well as supports this small flower farm.
Subscriptions will continue to be available until all slots are filled or through April 2nd.
I'm offering 3 full-season options. Choose from a monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly subscription.
Subcriptions begin in June and continue through October. Flowers will be available for delivery from Independence to Pittsburg and available for pick-up in Parsons, Oswego and Pittsburg.  For my flower friends in Lawrence and Topeka I am only providing the monthly subscription. Tip of the month!
Start those seeds! Cool season seeds that is. Slow growing cold loving flower and vegetable seeds can be started in February and March. A good rule of thumb is to start cool season flower seeds indoors 16-12 weeks before your last frost date and they can be transplanted outside 6-8 weeks before your last frost date with little to no protection. This includes flowers like sweet peas, snapdragons, sweet william, canterbury bells, larkspur, love-in-a-mist, and bells of Ireland. Many of these flowers can with stand temperatures several degrees below freezing.  Sweet peas won't be damaged until 26 degrees Fahrenheit.  If you fear a cold night or a stretch of cold whether you can cover plants with a frost cloth row cover or even a bed sheet for a short period of time to prevent damage.
Warm weather lovers like zinnias and sunflowers don't need to be started until around 4 weeks before the last frost date or direct sowed after the danger of frost has past.

Where will you find flowers in 2019?

Flowers and Coffee... Two of the best things. This year I will be returning to pop-up shops at Root Coffeehouse in Pittsburg. Pop-ups will be just like they sound. A bit sporadic and spontaneous. Pop-ups will be planned around when there is an abundance of blooms and there will only be a few over the summer. Subscriptions will be the only way to guarantee that you will enjoy flowers all season long. Stay tuned for more info.
