Lynher's Spirit Of Adventure at Sail GP Plymouth
So you might be wondering what Sail GP and Lynher have in common? Sail GP, (Grand Prix) is the sailing equivalent of Motorsports Formula One racing and uses the cutting-edge F50 one-design, wing-sailed catamaran. This amazing racing machine is capable of reaching speeds of 52 knots - which is 60 mph! The aim is to get the boat "flying" up out of the water and balancing on its foils to sail on apparent wind thus reaching these incredible speeds. The result is very dramatic and adrenaline-fuelled.

On the Sunday, 18th July of the Sail GP weekend, Lynher took some of Plymouth's Young Carers out into Plymouth Sound to watch the racing spectacle as part of the Plymouth City Council funded "Spirit Of Adventure" Mayflower 400 celebrations.  Everyone enjoyed a well earned break. The Young Carers/Carers Leavers team work together brilliantly even if they have never boarded a boat in their lives. They hosted the mainsail, trimmed the sails and steered the barge amongst a crowd of spectators boats! At anchor we had a lovely picnic on deck whilst watching the Sail GP races whilst playing our Spirit of Adventure game of the Plymouth Sound and learned some interesting facts about the Sound and its heritage.  Lynher's team is looking forward to host more of these days with young carers in the Autumn.

Family Heritage Sailing Weekend

This month has been a game of 2 halves. No, I am not talking about the Euro football but the weather! The first half of July never seemed to stop raining and the second half has been hot and humid. On the first weekend in July we welcomed the descendants of James Goss aboard Lynher. James Goss designed and built Lynher in 1896 and he would be delighted to know she was back at her best, sailing the waterways 125 years later, and with his family! Despite the rain the family had a brilliant time. It was the first time they had been out on Lynher and they wanted to introduce the next generation to their heritage. Last month we proudly  welcomed James Goss' Great Granddaughter, Norma Izard, OBE, to the Gymnasium as our guest of honour at our Cremyll Maritime Festival. On this voyage were Norma's two sons, Barrie and Mark with their wives and Barrie's twin daughters. This makes the twins James Goss' Great, Great, Granddaughters! They celebrated their birthdays aboard with an overnight "glamping" stay in Lynher's comfortable hold. A very memorable weekend was helped along with great locally sourced food expertly transformed into Mediterranean meals and, of course, a freshly baked birthday cake.

Lynher sailed past the banks of the Rivers Lynher & Tamar like in her hey days of transport. This would have been a familiar voyage to Lynher in the early 1900's as she went back and forth on the Tamar ferrying her cargoes of stones and produce. Her hold is now completely transformed into a wonderful and restful entertaining and sleeping space as the picture below illustrates. If you would like to know more about Lynher's Sailing Weekends and would like to host your own celebration on board then contact us to find out more as we can tailor the experience just for you and your family. Tide & Renewable Energy educational workshops
The last of the Tide & Renewable Energy educational workshops was delivered this month, with two more to go in September. These pilot sessions were sponsored by the Department of Culture, Media, Sport and Education through the Culture Recovery Fund. Since the re-opening on 19th May, Lynher CIC has engaged over 550 primary school children who have learned about renewable energy, the power of the tide and how to think differently in order to protect our environment. During these workshops  the children (and teachers) were able to learn about the heritage of the Plymouth waterways which was brought back to life for them by Lynher herself and a number of educational resources including a short animation film and an accurate wooden model of a Tidal Mill. From history to geography to hands on STEM activities aboard Lynher, every child had the opportunity to engage and learn in a fun way, including doing some PE as the children (some of them for the very first time) stepped aboard our safety boat to reach Lynher at anchor in Barn Pool, Mt.Edgcumbe. Every one of these session has been memorable for Lynher's team of instructors and volunteers. Every one of us received the most amazing 'thank you' cards and the most wonderful comments about the day and how much Lynher means to these children.

We will start to contact more schools from September to offer the workshops again in the following Spring & Summer terms. Lynher CIC will subsidise part of the cost of the workshops however there will be a charge of £15/child for the schools to cover. Some schools will be able to make some budget available whilst others won't. If you can help or you have a favourite school that you would like to sponsor, please contact our office to make a donation info@tamarbarge.org.uk
Children's Music School at Cremyll
Have you been wanting to find a music group for your children to join in with in the summer holidays and to have some fun learning new songs and playing new instruments? Jo's Music School will be holding workshops here at The Gymnasium. The theme of these workshops will be the river and the environment so it is perfect that the Lynher's heritage and the Rame Peninsula Beach Care displays will be the backdrop to inspire everyone whilst they play.  Jo has brought with her a range of beautiful instruments to try out and learn; as you can see from the picture above. See the poster below and contact Jo on her email for more information: jo@tamarbarge.org.uk
