Dear Friends of Fordham Sailing,
Fordham competed at two events this past weekend, both held at Cornell. The Cayuga Lake Invite is a combined six-team event, with three boats from each team competing in a single combined division. Though this format is atypical of most college sailing events, it is ideal for the early part of the season to maximize time on the water for the most sailors per team. Scores from all three boats are combined to calculate the overall team score. Competing for the Rams at the Cayuga Lake Invite was Clayton Snyder '22 with Lauren Miller '23, Porter Kavle '22 with Kristen Healy '24, and Kenny Corsig '23 with Eddie Harrison '22.
The Big Red Invite is a secondary event run concurrently with the Cayuga and was open to boats from the same six teams, Fordham representing two of the eighteen total boats. Because the event featured an uneven number of boats per team, it was scored individually. Competing for the Rams at the Big Red Invite was Patrick Dolan '25 with Bella Rabeni '24 and Griffin Sisk '23 with Rebecca "RK" Keller '25.
Conditions delivered on both days at Cornell for classic fall finger lake sailing. After a short delay on land both mornings, the breeze filled from the north and racing got underway in the late morning. On Saturday, the northerly held steady with a slightly oscillating breeze that started out around 6-8 knots and built to around 10-12 knots by the end of the day. 10 races were sailed in both fleets. Sunday brought much the same breeze with an equally steady but slightly lighter northerly. At the Cayuga, the Rams struggled to get off the line, which made for a difficult time climbing back in the relatively steady breeze. Ultimately, the Rams finished 5th in combined scores with Kenny Corsig '23 and Eddie Harrison '22 placing a team highest 7th overall. Though the overall finish was not what we hoped for, the event served as great FJ practice a necessary warmup event after nearly two years absence from fleet race regattas. The Big Red Invite was a different story with Patrick Dolan '25 and Bella Rabeni '24 sailing a strong event throughout and closing out the regatta Sunday with a dominant performance to take the overall win. Congrats to Patrick and Bella on a great event! Scores for both events can be viewed at the tech score links below
This coming weekend, the Rams will be competing at two events, the Top 9 MAISA Coed/Women's at Cornell and the MAISA Match Race Championship at Navy. The Top 9 is actually two separate events run concurrently, both featuring the same teams. Scores for the two Top 9 events can be viewed at the links below. The MAISA Match Race will feature the top eight teams in MAISA and will serve as the qualifier for the ICSA Match Race Nationals to be held in November, with the top two teams advancing. Scores for the MAISA Match Race will be viewable on tech score once the event goes live.
