Fordham University Sailing Team

Dear Friends of Fordham Sailing,

This past weekend, Fordham competed in three separate events, the Women's ACC Round 1A, the Danmark Trophy, and the King's Point Dinghy Open.

At the Women's ACC Round 1A, the Rams faced a competitive field and some tough sailing conditions all weekend. Both days of racing saw a light and shifty southerly breeze ranging from about 4-8 knots. With big left shifts coming off the shore, the course was a classic "go left" college sailing racetrack that rewarded strong starts with the ability to hold a lane to the left side of the course and aggressive light air boat handling. Unfortunately, the limited light air practice time we've had this season showed and the Rams struggled to consistently get punched out on the starting line and push to the left side of the race course. The Rams put together a few strong races showing they could hang near the top of the fleet at their best but ultimately finished 15th. The finish advances Fordham to the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament to be held at MIT on October 16-17. Results for the Women's ACC Round 1A can be viewed at the Tech Score link below.

The Danmark is notorious for being the most competitive non championship event on the college sailing schedule. Beyond an extremely competitive field, Coast Guard is known to be a very challenging venue and this weekend was no exception. An extremely light and shifty westerly breeze with racing happening just off shore made for some very unpredictable conditions, with large pressure and angle differentials even only a few boat lengths apart. In what has been a consistent theme during these first few weekends back racing after a near two-year absence, the Rams struggled to find consistency throughout the weekend, ultimately finishing in 18th out of the increased 20-team fleet. Results for the Danmark can be viewed at the Tech Score link below. Many thanks to the Healy Family for hosting the team and to Nina Synnestvedt '14 for chaperoning.

The King's Point Dinghy Open is one of the best second tier events of the fall season and this year was no exception with 22 teams from across the country. Sailors were treated on Saturday to the rare Easterly long island sound breeze, which made for a shifty 8-15 knot breeze coming over land and some challenging but fun racing. The Rams sailed well throughout most of the day but struggled towards the end of racing on Saturday, ultimately finishing in 9th of out the increased 22-team fleet.  Results for the KPDO can be viewed at the Tech Score link below. Many thanks to Emma Archard '18 for chaperoning the team.

This weekend, the Rams are competing at one event, the Coed ACC Round 1A at Brown. Like the women's events this past weekend, this is one of two 18-team coed events held simultaneously, with the top 9 advancing to the Coed Atlantic Coast Championship and the next 9 teams advancing to the Coed Atlantic Coast Tournament. Racing is going on right now and you can follow the results throughout the weekend at the Tech Score link below.
