Roberti Community House Celebrates Ten Years

Ten years ago, we started as a determined little green sprout on 8th Street in Waukegan, at the site of a run-down former gang house in foreclosure. Today we are a flourishing garden with tendrils stretching throughout Lake County, with programs spanning cooking to gardening to general health and wellness, all in service to underserved communities.

Throughout 2021, we will look back at the last ten years through the eyes and smiles of our friends, neighbors, partners, supporters and volunteers. Each month we'll give you a peek at how our classes, programs and events have multiplied, how neighborhood kids have grown up playing in our kitchen and garden, and how our volunteers and partners have kept us going. Here's to many more decades!

What RCH Means to Me
Meet Monica Sierra, a Dominican University Social Work student doing her internship at Roberti Community House:
In my two years at Roberti Community House, I have seen that the staff and volunteers have community members’ absolute best interest at heart, a fierce amount of dedication and love that they endlessly pour out into the community. The whole team at RCH focuses on building relationships with our clients and families and is extremely dedicated to meeting the immediate needs of our community. The effort and care that staff and volunteers put into programming so that the community may benefit is remarkable. Roberti Community House and the community it serves have had a significant impact on my learning journey and development as a social worker. I will always be grateful for this experience that will serve me throughout my professional career.
Remaining Responsive to Community Needs
Emergency Food Response Expansion

We quickly determined that we must continue in 2021 what the pandemic started in 2020: our focus on feeding and helping those who need it most. Here's a quick look at the impact Roberti Community House is having so far in 2021:

Our weekly pop-up food distribution sites have expanded in 2021! The two newest pop up sites are positioned specifically to bring food to seniors in housing. One elderly recipient expressed her gratitude by saying,
“This is perfect because I don’t have a car. The nearest place to buy food is the gas station. I won’t go there because it’s too far of a walk and I don’t like the way I am treated when I go there.”

Community Health Worker Program

We are proud of a new partnership with the Illinois Public Health Association (IPHA), in collaboration with Illinois Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA), that will allow us to increase our community impact. Roberti Community House is launching the COVID-19 Pandemic Health Navigator Program to work with the most vulnerable populations impacted by COVID-19. This program will provide COVID-19 education and outreach to communities and populations impacted by COVID-19, ease the navigation of care resource coordination for those impacted by COVID-19 and address unmet community needs.

Welcome Danish Ismail!

We're excited to announce that Danish Ismail joined RCH’s Board of Directors in early 2021. Danish has an extensive background in IT and Operations, having worked in corporate America and also ran his own business, Synergia Corporation, for over 25 years.
Danish has been described as a “Perpetual Optimizer” who is constantly looking to optimize systems, time, and funding. He likes the challenge of making things better and looks forward to developing systems and processes to reduce costs and sustain the growth Roberti Community House has been experiencing.
Danish is a welcome addition to the Board and his skills will greatly enhance the quality of the team.
