Your Favorite Community Grandmother

At Roberti Community House, we have the privilege of working directly with so many members of the community. This support has helped people to feel less alone during this crisis.

Think of RCH as the community’s Grandmother. The kind one who is always making hot soup and checking on her neighbors. Someone you can trust to look after your kids and you can call for help because she knows everyone.
The families we serve struggle with sub-standard housing and lack affordable food, health care, technology, and transportation. Sometimes hope and some warm food is all we can give, but it is enough to face another day.

Your support allows Roberti Community House to remain responsive and provide:
  • Food for families and for isolated adults such as those with COVID-19, senior citizens, and the medically fragile...including the Grandma-approved soups made by RCP each week.
  • Case management to help families access the resources they so desperately need.
  • Accurate information so that families are knowledgeable and empowered.

Our Experience in the Arctic

In newsletters, we frequently talk about "what" we are doing, but don't often go into detail about "how" we do it. As I write this, the weather outside hovers around 0 degrees...colder even than Anchorage, Alaska. Providing food in sub-zero temperatures requires a great deal of planning. Groceries are distributed under a tent with propane heaters inside to keep the temperature manageable. We frequently use hand warmers in our gloves and in our boots to stay warm enough. We rotate volunteers frequently to prevent frostbite. All of the extra care is worth it when we are able to hand food to a hungry family.

What Roberti Community House Means To Me

Meet Avery Boothe, an Northeastern Illinois University Social Work student doing his internship at Roberti Community House. Avery has been pivotal in the weekly Lakeside Towers food distribution in Waukegan.
"After an 8 year career in the military I decided it was time to go back to school and get an education. After some trial and error, fate guided me into the social work field. After scrambling to find an internship during the midst of a pandemic, fate intervened once again and led me right to the doorsteps of the Roberti Community House. From the moment I arrived, I knew this was exactly where I belonged. I have always believed my purpose in life was to serve others and for the first time in my life I was in a room full of like-minded peers. Everyone just taking action to help others was so inspiring to me. Volunteers from all over Lake County setting up meal kits here, staff signing up families for resources there, Pam’s voice in the background directing people and Maribeth literally all over the place. I jumped right in and never looked back.
This organization embodies what a community is, and has done an amazing job restoring that feeling throughout the city of Waukegan."
