Branch AGM and other news

Dear Dancers,
Very many thanks to those of you who turned out for the AGM, and may I take this opportunity to welcome our new committee members. They are Elizabeth and John Pugh, Marion Walbank, Nicola Waugh and Jill Woodman.  Claire Johnston was confirmed as the Chair. I look forward to working with them all.

Our thanks go to those members who have retired from the committee at the end of their current term - Catherine Livsey (Vice Chair), Mairi Devlin, Adrian Dickin and Duncan Sheehan. Duncan was active as Minutes Secretary and is stepping down for family reasons. Our longstanding Treasurer, Gerry Yates is also standing down, and a special thank you to him for all the sterling work he has done over very many years for the Branch. A generous cheque was presented to the Branch from the estate of Diana Ashworth, whose death was announced earlier this year.  The other bit of good news for the teachers and trainee teachers in the Branch - you now qualify for a 20% discount on all the CDs and books you buy from the Branch shop.

The AGM was followed by a lovely programme devised by MC Maureen Haynes to the music of the Alan Ross Duo - it is just a shame more dancers were not there to enjoy it.

Joint Ball in Tadcaster with York & North Humberside Branch

As most of you will know our next dance is the annual ball at a wonderful venue (Riley-Smith Hall in Tadcaster) to the magical music of Marian Anderson and her Scottish Dance Band. I am sure it will be a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I'm told the food in past years has always been great. This will be my first time there.  There's still time to get a ticket (£19 including supper) from one of the teachers.

Rod Downey - For those dancers who enjoy Rod Downey dances and those lucky enough to attend his day school in York, you might be interested to know that New Zealand’s top science award, the 2018 Rutherford Medal, worth $100,000, has gone to Professor Rod Downey, a mathematician at Victoria University of Wellington. Mathematician wins top science award. Our congratulations go to Rod.
