Celebrate National Aviation Day
in the Outer Banks!
We invite you to celebrate National Aviation Day (Orville and Katharine Wright’s birthdays!) on Friday, August 19, at two different locations in the Outer Banks: Wright Brothers National Memorial and Dare County Regional Airport!

Join our friends at the National Park Service and the First Flight Society to honor the achievements of the Wrights and how their legacy continues to change the world today...and even outer space!

If you can't join us in person, we will be live streaming an exciting program with Dr. J. "Bob" Balaram of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Wright Brothers National Memorial at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 19. Click here for more details about this online experience!

Meet Your Ranger: Adonis Osekre
Our Meet Your Rangerseries introduces you to the many amazing people who support our Outer Banks national parks every day!

We're pleased to introduce you to Adonis Osekre, Seasonal Interpretive Park Ranger at Wright Brothers National Memorial! Adonis is an Outer Banks resident and has been working with the Outer Banks Group of the National Park Service for the past eight summers. He is passionate about public speaking and inspiring others. When he's not working, he enjoys spending time with his loved ones, listening to classic rock and country music and watching funny videos!

A New Way to Get on the Wright Route!

Orville and Wilbur Wright changed the course of human history in twelve seconds when they completed the first successful heavier-than-air powered flight on the sands of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. But their journey to the skies began long before they set foot on the barrier islands of the Outer Banks.

Last year, along with our friends at the National Aviation Heritage Area, the First Flight Society and the National Park Service at Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park and Wright Brothers National Memorial, we were thrilled to share with you www.WrightRoute.org, an online hub that connects the legacy of aviation of North Carolina, “First in Flight,” and Ohio, the “Birthplace of Aviation,” and puts the “aviation rivalry” to rest. Now, there's a new way for you to get on the Wright Route and remember your aviation-themed adventures!

Leatherback Sea Turtles: Titans of the Deep
As part of our summer "Ask A BioTech" series, our friend Benjamin Ranelli, Seasonal Biological Science Technician at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, tells us all about leatherback sea turtles, the largest sea turtle species - and the largest species of turtle - in the world!

Note: Our 2022
Adopt A Sea Turtle Nest season closes on August 31! Currently, our park staff is monitoring 350 sea turtle nests on the Seashore, and 177 of these nests have been adopted so far this summer. That means we are just 23 nests away from our goal of 200 nest adoptions! To adopt your nest today, click here.

Your Impact in Our Parks
Did you know your gift helps future generations learn and grow in our Outer Banks national parks?

Because of our donors, we were able to help our park staff at Wright Brothers National Memorial print 2,000 Junior Flight Ranger books when supply chain challenges delayed an order this summer. The Junior Flight Ranger program helps kids continue the Wright brothers' legacy of making the impossible possible by inspiring them to soar to new heights. Over 2,000 kids have participated in the program in the past month alone!
Here's another way your gifts support our Outer Banks national parks: by helping to install new educational signs!

Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to help our park staff at Cape Hatteras National Seashore create and install a new educational sign on the grounds of the Ocracoke Lighthouse that shares the history of the oldest functioning lighthouse in North Carolina.

The base of the lighthouse is currently open for inside viewing seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. through September 5.
Ranger programs are offered Monday through Thursday at 11 a.m. on the lighthouse grounds. Swing by and say hi to our rangers!
