New friends for Walter

When Walter lost his friend Horace, he was lost and bereft. After spending his short solitary life isolated in a metal trailer, with no windows, no paddock to graze or roll in, Walter's first companions when he arrived at Flicka were our two aged gentlemen Horace and Little Bertie.

After we lost Little Bertie, Walter stuck by Horace's side constantly, then sadly last month we also lost Horace. We were worried about poor Walter, and decided to introduce him into our small herd of French donkeys. To our delight it has been the perfect match.....Walter has fast become best friends with Pierre (pictured bottom right relaxing in the sunshine).

The four French donkeys, rescued late last year from horrific conditions on their way to the meat markets on the continent, are settling in well to their life in Cornwall. Louis and Rocky (pictured left and middle in the photo below alongside Claude) are a little more nervous than the others and still wearing headcollars so we can bring them in and out easily for the vet, farrier and dentist. Rocky is the largest, a stunning donkey with a majestic head and the most enormous ears! He is also the most nervous having sadly lost his friend to the meat man before we could save him. These handsome boys are growing in confidence by the day and their delightful personalities are shining through as they become more trusting and affectionate.

Sam's daring deed for the donkeys

One of our long term dedicated volunteers, Samantha Gill, is doing a sponsored wing walk to raise money towards our upcoming Hospital Appeal. On Wednesday 10th July, Sam will be taking to the skies from Bodmin Airfield with Mike Dentith, atop the wings of his Boeing Stearman plane.

Mike is an extremely experienced wing walking and display pilot, and has featured on TV including when Phillip Schofield walked aloft for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Challenge programme.

We can’t thank Sam enough for doing this; we cannot believe how brave she is!! If you would like to sponsor Sam you can do so on her Just Giving fundraising page

All these funds will kick start the preview to our upcoming major appeal - The Lonely and Primrose  Hospital Appeal. Every single penny raised will go to this project... more details of which will be coming soon.

Calling for volunteers

We desperately need more friendly, reliable and confident volunteers to help us at the sanctuary during our public opening times - Tuesday to Thursday plus weekends and Bank Holidays, including during school holidays. We're ideally suited for those who are over 16,  great with people and are passionate about animal welfare.

If this sounds like you, join us at our next Volunteer Recruitment Day on Tuesday 4 June, and find out more about the volunteering opportunities with us. It's not all shovelling muck - although that is an option - we also need volunteers in our tea room, shop and greeting visitors.

Animal Allsorts at Treleigh School

Year 1 pupils at Treleigh CP School in Redruth learned all about our donkeys as part of their Animal Allsorts project this month. We had a lovely afternoon visiting the school where the children learned about the donkeys at the sanctuary and how we take care of them. They even had a chance to try grooming our very well behaved (replica) donkey William. Following our visit they held an animal crafts sale to raise money for the class to adopt one of the donkeys here at Flicka. We can't wait to see which of our lovely residents they choose.
As well as talking to students in schools, we welcome school and group visits to the sanctuary to meet the donkeys and see our work first hand. If you know of a group that would enjoy a visit, please get in touch. We'd love to see you.
We hope you enjoy reading these updates from the donkeys at our sanctuary.  As a registered charity we could not survive without your generosity and help. Thank you as always for your wonderful support.
