For the first time ever in Bangladesh, a climate tech company and a global fashion brand have joined forces to create an ESCO company to develop and set up solar rooftop installations across the country for a greener supply chain.
SOLshare and BESTSELLER’s joint venture Greener Garment Initiative Ltd. will be building, owning, and operating up to 10 MW of solar rooftop projects across several of BESTSELLER’s suppliers in Bangladesh. Solar PV rooftop installations are increasingly becoming the default choice for the garment industry in the country due to their profitability and sustainability across the entire value chain.

In partnership with SOLshare, the British High Commission installed a 15.93 kilowatt-per-hour grid-tied rooftop solar project for its office in an attempt to move to renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. The solar power generated will be offset against the High Commission’s electricity consumption from the grid.

What inspires you to take action? - The Power of the Swarm!
When asked to answer this question at The Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit, Dr. Sebastian’s emphasis was on the concept of swarm electrification - the very concept upon which our peer-to-peer grid was established.

The reason - it requires an army of cleantech innovators, all working toward the same goal to create synergies strong enough to stand a chance against this daunting task of saving the planet - The Power of the Swarm

We are raising investments for our SOLmobility business line, offering a largely untapped market with IoT-based Lithium-ion batteries creating a deep social and environmental impact.
To date, we have raised $6.1 million from project revenues, grants, and prizes. Our early success with SOLgrid and SOLroof (operating under both CAPEX and OPEX models), strong network, and our aggressive yet realistic sales projections showcase a credible financing opportunity for everyone who wants to be a part of the clean energy future.

In April 2022, we connected a solar peer-to-peer (p2p) microgrid with the national grid, a solution inaugurated officially by Dr. Tawfiq Elahi Chowdhury, energy adviser to the Hon’ble. Prime Minister on the 21st of June 2022.
Today, a community of 20 farmers has fed over 700 kWh of solar electricity into the national grid over the past 8 months, earning an additional income of over BDT 35,000, covering almost the entire basic electricity requirement by the community over two months.
During the severe energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine, this community benefited from a nearly uninterrupted power supply, as whenever the national grid availability was diminishing, self-consumption from our solar p2p microgrid increased.
FUTURE POTENTIAL
Expanding this pilot from a single grid to 50 grids potentially means feeding 13.5MWh of electricity into the national grid on a monthly basis, while the prosumers would benefit on average from an additional income stream of BDT 600 per month.

SOLmobility has begun gaining traction with EVs currently running nationwide across different districts using lithium-ion (LI) batteries integrated with SOLshare’s smart pay-as-you-go (PayG) solution covering over 150,000 km. It has been extremely encouraging to see a growing need and interest from both charging garage owners and EV drivers for more smart tech-integrated LI batteries.
Some interesting insights gathered through our surveys have found that drivers’ incomes increased up to 34% with significant improvements in both user experience and driver satisfaction. Drivers were able to enjoy higher battery efficiency from smoother rides to being able to drive longer as well as decreased charging costs as the lithium-ion batteries consumed 40% less electricity than their market-driven counterparts, the lead-acid batteries.
At the same time, garage owners have been able to enjoy decreased electricity costs through LI batteries and even more through the integration of solar PV. Over the next month, SOLshare will be deploying several more batteries in collaboration with partners.

We are thrilled to announce that for the second time, SOLshare has received follow on funding from The Andan Foundation, for Innovation in Refugee Inclusion for our work in the Rohingya Refugees Camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. What this means for the grids - we can keep the lights on for our 250 Rohingya Refugees for another 2 years!
The Rohingya Refugee camp is one of the most vulnerable communities and geographical locations in Bangladesh. SOLshare’s innovation, the SOLgrid, is linking multiple solar energy generation and storage sources in the camp to form an energy exchange platform - the peer-to-peer microgrid.
This project in partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is ensuring residents of the camp have access to energy - a basic human right that can pave the path for displaced populations to begin the most difficult task of rebuilding their lives.

For the second time, SOLshare has secured a win at the BASIS National ICT Awards. This time for our micro-mobility solution. SOLmobility has been awarded for the best Sustainability and Environment solution for 2022 in the head category of Inclusions and Community Services at the nation's most prestigious ICT Awards.

Rubel Shah is an electric three-wheeler driver from Rajshahi who is absolutely elated with his lithium-ion (LI) battery. Termed “excellent” by Rubel, he enjoys the faster charging, and even more so the fact that he can check the battery’s charge level. His new battery also allows him to cover more distance, and the lighter battery weight ensures that he can carry more passengers or goods, as opposed to the heavier lead acid battery which weighed his vehicle down. Collectively, carrying more passengers and having a higher mileage has helped to increase Rubel’s daily income.

Celebrations and games filled the day as current and ex-SOLsharers gathered to celebrate SOLshare’s 7th birthday. The very happening and lively day was complete with cake, a fireside chat with our founders, and finally planting some trees to conclude the event the SOLshare way!

Weisman’s research for his new book brought him to Bangladesh, and eventually to SOLshare. After visiting SOLshare offices, Alan Weisman’s research took him to the Rohingya Refugee Camps, where he visited SOLshare’s solar p2p grids and conversed with some of the community members about their experiences.
