Join us on Saturday November 19th at the Delhi Community Center in Santa Ana. The AISS Scholars will be presenting their Social Enterprise Pitches in a "Shark Tank AISS Style" event.

Every savvy business person knows that presenting your idea is as important as the idea itself! That’s why AISS encourages our scholar participants to polish their pitches. It’s not enough to have a great social enterprise idea – they have to be able to market those ideas in compelling and comprehensive ways. And showcasing those presentations is what the AISS SHARK TANK 2022 EVENT is all about.

Join us for an afternoon of light appetizers, Scholar Pitch Presentations, Auction Items, and greeting AISS family and friends.

Over the few past months, the scholars of AISS were able to meet with their one-on-one College Essay Guy Matchlighters Mentors to review their college essays. We worked with our AISS Advisors to plan and implement our college application timelines. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet guest speakers who were delighted to share their advice and experiences in college and beyond. On August 6th, the end of the Summer session, scholars presented their Educational Business Plan to parents, students, and Chapman University staff at the Closing Parent Conference. This allowed us to practice our public speaking skills and share our college choices and how we will put our plans into action.

To start off our Fall semester, we met Frank Cabada, an AISS Class of 2013 alumni and current Software Engineer at Google. He gave an insightful presentation on his journey to Columbia University as a first-generation student. His anecdotes about the professional organizations he joined helped the current AISS scholars understand the power of networking in college. Team 1 was happy to welcome him as he gave us advice on our college application journey.

Within the past month, I have returned to school and am continuing to prepare for college applications. Everything has been a bit overwhelming along with new classes and other responsibilities, but I am working through it one day at a time. As I am adjusting to the new year I am quickly learning the importance of preparation.

I recently was named Team 4 Lead and am very excited to grow into my role and understand what kind of responsibilities are in store. I am also considering the type of college I want to apply for and have already scheduled a few college tours and am planning to visit a college fair.

I have a long history with AISS and Paul Riordan, the founder of AISS. AISS has been a part of my family for almost 20 years. Back in 2003, my older brother, Ricardo, was the first program manager. In 2005 I took over that role and oversaw the completion of the classes of 2007 and 2009. My younger brother, Joshua, would go on to participate as a scholar in the class of 2015. This program had a significant impact on the three of us. Paul provided us an opportunity for employment while going to school and we helped him fulfill a vision of helping young people from Santa Ana pursue education and careers in STEM.

Paul was my mentor, friend, and even though he would’ve hated the comparison, a grandfather figure I could confide in and learn from. Paul showed me a world where young people who looked like me and had similar life experiences as me could pursue careers in STEM and harness skills that would make them successful in the classroom, in their profession, and eventually for some, in the board room.
