As the scholars finish up their last semester as seniors in high school they have been working extremely hard on turning in all of their last minute assignments, studying hard for their final exams, and buzzing with excitement to graduate. They’ve been juggling between schoolwork, extracurriculars, studying, and making their final college choice by May 1st. Their summer project, the Educational Business Plan (EBP), has made the process easier to decide which college is the best fit for them. Researching their top ten colleges back in the summer before their senior year allowed them to have a wide outlook as prospective students in their top ten colleges. After years of beautiful memories, wisdom, and laughter, we are disheartened to announce that Dr. Luis Ortiz-Franco will no longer serve as a board member at Achievement Institute for Stem Scholars, formerly Achievement Institute of Scientific Studies. Dr. Ortiz-Franco has been involved with the program as an advisor, mentor, instructor, ambassador, and board member. He was kind enough to step in and be the interim Board Chair last year when we needed him.

Dr. Ortiz-Franco will remain as one of our cherished Ambassadors and friends. Over the years, Professor Ortiz has gone above and beyond for our scholars by helping advance their mathematical abilities and mentoring them, and providing our scholars with books to expand their knowledge of math history. All of our scholars in AISS have benefited from his knowledge and experience as a strong Hispanic male in the STEM field. He has served as a prime example that students of a similar background can succeed in STEM fields and make a huge difference for future generations in their community. Our scholars and colleagues will miss him as he has been an integral part of our program. On behalf of everyone in the Achievement Institute for Stem Scholars, we would like to wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and thank him for his continuous dedication and impact on our program.

With Much Appreciation & Gratitude ~

Right after I turned a year old, I met my dad, and I obviously don’t remember that, but then I would grow up with my Hispanic family only speaking Spanish. I didn’t start speaking English completely until I was in fifth grade because I was embarrassed and afraid to speak it. I learned math in Spanish, but then in fourth grade, my bilingual school would switch my math curriculum to English, and I still loved it. Math was a way for me to learn English and to get more comfortable with it. I have always loved mathematics and how it is a universal language.  To me, math came easy, but once I encountered obstacles and challenges, I discovered...
