Introducing Team 2

Dear AISS Supporter,

Over the last month, we began our final semester in high school. College applications were due the previous semester, and many of us have already been accepted to universities throughout the country. Our educational business plan, as well as our implementation plan, will help us stay organized and on track to apply for scholarships throughout the spring. With graduation coming around the corner, we are more focused than ever to keep the morale and grades up. Over the next several weeks, we will be awaiting college admissions to release their decisions by early April, and we will eagerly wait for our letters of acceptance and financial aid offers from our top school choices.

On January 23rd, we were excited to meet with guest speaker Zulema Uriarte. Uriarte double majored in International Business and Marketing at Cal State University Long Beach. She shared her professional journey working first at Walt Disney Animation Studios to now working for Netflix, Inc. Her position at Netflix helps bring inclusion and diversity into animations.

We are preparing for the AISS Information Sessions on February 19 and on March 6 to recruit the new cohort, Class of 2023.

Daniela Salazar
Future Engineer
 Segerstrom High School Senior
Class of 2021
Being a team leader means listening to others and being able to work with others. Through different clubs and leadership positions, I have learned how to do that. Being involved in clubs like CSF (California Scholarship Federation), LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), Environmental Club, and Femineers has taught me to work with others and learn to listen to what others want to have a working club. As Vice President for a club, I have learned how to communicate better and be a better teammate in a work environment. Being in other organizations like AISS (Achievement Institute of Scientific Studies), Simon Scholars, and The Wooden Floor has opened my eyes to different ways that people work together and learn from each other.  I love to work with others and learn from others' perspectives, backgrounds, and cultures.

Being social and having hobbies like dance are ways I have learned how to talk to people in different ways. Dancing helps free my emotions and connect with others in ways you can’t through just speaking with someone. I am also fluent in Spanish, which makes it easier to understand people in my community. Being fluent in two languages expands my horizons on who I can communicate with and relate to. Relationships with others are always good because you never know in what way they will be able to assist you in the future or what way you may be able to help them. I love to have different relationships with people and enjoy talking to different types of people. I am a social person that loves meeting new people.

My future goals are to graduate from a four-year university and graduate as an engineer. I hope to get a stable job in order to be a successful engineer. I hope to have an engineering company and to travel the world. Overall, I am a determined person that hopes to accomplish what I want for my future.

Alumni Spotlight

Ayami Nieves Staff Attorney
Staff Attorney - Public Law Center
AISS Alumna Class of 2007
I attended Santa Ana High School and was a part of the AISS Class of 2007. AISS provided me with support and the tools I would need to apply to college and be college-ready. I was raised by a single mother who had immigrated to the U.S. I am our first generation born in this country. I knew I was going to need to work hard to get into college and succeed in college. I was also aware of our limited resources. AISS gave me the scholastic support I needed. AISS provided SAT and ACT preparation as well as a chance to tour some of our local colleges. This is something I would not have had a chance to do without AISS. AISS believes in the success of their students and provides the tools necessary in order for each one of us to reach our goals. I went on to attend UC San Diego... READ MORE>>

Supporter Spotlight

Mohammad Jaffrey
Community Outreach & Partnerships Manager

I was born and raised in Orange County. I am a child of immigrants from Pakistan, which helped shape my unique worldview. I spent most of my professional career at The Walt Disney Company. I started selling tickets at Disneyland nine years ago and most recently helped launch Disney+. I was recognized as Volunteer of the Year throughout my career at Disney, a recipient of The Disney Legacy Award. I was selected to participate in a humanitarian effort in the Amazon in Ecuador. My work has spanned multiple industries, including travel, tourism, marketing, the movie studio, and streaming. I worked on Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar's campaigns, focusing on marketing partnerships, synergy, events, and world premieres. The through-line in my life is service to others. I have spent eight years as a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and have made mentoring and investing in youth my mission, which is why I thought AISS would be an excellent fit for me. I wanted to gear my service towards STEM students and advocate for adding the 'a' in STEAM as it shaped my own life experience. At ARRAY Ava DuVernay's company, I lead Partnerships and Community Outreach in my new career path.
