During the months of June and July, AISS Scholars attended classes at Samueli Academy, Chapman University, and Edwards Lifescience.  Monday classes were hosted at Samueli Academy by Mr. Nino Polizzi, Engineering Instructor, who taught the scholars about electricity and circuits. We had the opportunity to build a circuit that used 2 triple-A batteries to power a mini LED bulb by performing welding and calculating resistance in a circuit.

AISS Class of 2023, Santa Ana High School
Future Software Engineer

Hello there! I am Lorena Alvarez, a senior at Santa Ana High School with a passion for Computer Science.  My career interests lie within the interconnectivity of Computer Science and Psychology through Artificial Intelligence.  This month, my time with AISS was busy but very enjoyable!  We completed our Educational Business Plans and had the opportunity to tour UCLA and attend our first Networking Mixer Event. Amidst this, I was also able to have a “core moment” as a specific speaker introduced me to a new field that I’m eager to explore in the future!

We often began our week with the Educational Business Plan. The Educational Business Plan centers on our senior year, along with research on colleges and scholarships. We organized all the deadlines for our senior year into an Implementation Plan. I found this assignment helpful, as it gave me structure for the stressful time ahead.

In this month of August, I have moved back onto campus and am starting a fresh new year. So excited!

This upcoming school year I will be the Construction Manager for the concrete canoe design team for the American Society of Civil Engineers club. In addition, I am a proud member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and I am working alongside the Community Outreach committee to give kids from K-12th grade exposure to STEM.
