"Science is the best idea humans ever had. The more people who embrace that idea, the better." - Bill Nye
Dear AISS supporter,

We are happy to introduce you to our new AISS Cohort!

AISS’ Class of 2021 began their summer session June 10th at Chapman University’s Hashinger Science Center.

Things kicked off with introductions of our program and staff. After learning how to do a proper AISS Introduction themselves, students met our instructors and staff then received school supplies and their official AISS jackets.

The first week included many creative icebreakers thought up by each of our instructors. One such icebreaker included Dr. Rojas’ “Shoe Scramble”, where scholars swapped shoes and trivia about themselves.

Other first week highlights included instructor Mike Stanislawczyk’s Pringle challenge. Scholars were faced with a test in structural engineering- they attempted to construct an arc or ring that could stand on its own using only the ubiquitous snack. Many scholars got close only to have their Pringle structure collapse with a misplaced chip, but several completed the challenge.

The scholars also took individual and group photos across Chapman’s scenic campus.

The first week concluded with a field trip to Marshall B. Ketchum University. Students toured the health science-focused graduate school and participated in several interactive exhibits.

We are looking forward to introducing you to each of these impressive students. In the first week alone, they’ve shown an excitement and willingness to learn that AISS hopes to develop even further.

Edwards Externs 2019
Congratulations to our 2019 Edwards Externs Paola Abarca, Adriana Castrejon, Liseth Mendoza, Julio Segura and Isabel Pham! These 5 AISS Alumni were selected to participate in an externship with Edwards Lifesciences this summer. "What I look most forward to for my Edwards Externship is to gain knowledge on how a company runs," Lizeth said about getting the externship. "I am interested in how all departments handle patient devices with their utmost care. I find it interesting how every person contributes to building a device that will help save many lives."

AISS Summer Instructors

Born and raised in Santa Ana, I grew up right across the street from Our Lady of the Pillar Church where they had the grammar school from 1st through 8th grade. I attended Mater Dei High School back in the day when we couldn’t win a football game and basketball wasn’t a powerhouse.  Mater Dei found me in the football band, the jazz band, the marching band and the concert band. Even today I can play the piano, the trumpet, the bass guitar and the saxophone .. all equally as bad.  I loved both math and the sciences. Traveling was in my heart, a luxury growing up, so what better way to travel the country than to attend Princeton University. I encountered many trials and tribulations, but I had strong support from my family, my friends at home and the many new friends I met in college.  I graduated with a BS degree in both Computer Science and Electrical Engineer.

I now work at Cisco Systems as a Network Engineering training our global teams on our latest products …. Some travel is required.

I'm originally from San Jose, CA, and have been a technical and leadership principal in a career that spans 30 years in entertainment, communication, education, as well as information management and security.I have my undergraduate degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and an MBA in Technology Management from the University of Phoenix.

I'm active in community programs and like to lend my expertise to solve problems that improve services for residents of Orange and Los Angeles Counties. I work with multiple NGO nonprofits, having: prepared studies on community program effectiveness; applied data science tools and methods to help measure student success; taught vocational and career technical education (CTE) courses; worked as a vocal advocate of STEM/STEAM programs in our education system that includes combining theory with computer modeling and making a wide range of products.
