Yamhill County News Update

What we've been talking about

  • The Newberg City Council has not referred the "kids not camps" City Charter amendment to the voters. Newberg City Council held a special meeting last Monday night (read Councilor Elise Yarnell Hollamon's recap here and watch Councilor Jefferson Mildenberger's recap here) to discuss the recent petition effort to amend the City Charter to prohibit non-permanent housing. The chief petitioners met with Councilors Elise Yarnell Hollamon and Denise Bacon to amend the petition's langauge, and the revised text was presented to the Council last night. Ultimately, the resolution to put the amendment on the November ballot wasn't voted on. Read the latest version here.
  • The Yamhill County Board of Commissioners will allow Measure 109 on psilocybin facilities to take effect in January, although some cities in the county will get to vote on whether the facilities are banned completely, subjected to a two year moratorium, or allowed to open as scheduled. Read the News-Register's reporting here.
  • Last month, "in a closely watched ruling, the state’s highest court declined to extend certain free speech protections available to the media to ordinary people, batting down arguments that anyone with an internet connection and an opinion now acts as a journalist." The ruling could have significance for some local issues. Read more here.
  • There will be a measure on the November ballot to amend Oregon's constitution to abolish slavery once and for all. The campaign is seeking endorsements from nonprofits, labor unions, businesses, trade associations, faith organizations, social services organizations, and prominent individuals. Click here for info on how to volunteer to collect endorsements.
Opportunities to get involved

  • Volunteer with Saturday Morning Breakfast in Mac. This is a great way to serve the community and our community members that are hungry or food insecure. Learn more here.
  • Share your story with GaraDatos, the Journal of Community Experience & Analysis. The publication began as a grassroots effort in a community under siege by radicalized conservatism, cronyism, and regressive ideals. Foundational to GaraDatos is active discourse among neighbors, students, educators, community leaders, politicians, organizers and business leaders with a shared goal in growth and intellectual curiosity. Learn more, Sign-up to contribute your essays, poetry, visual art, and audiovisual media, and subscribe to upcoming issues here.

Do you have finance experience? Do you want to be the YCD's new treasurer?
Yamhill County Democrats need a new Treasurer. Sadly, the current elected Treasurer is resigning at the end of the month, and this is a role we really can't have unfilled. While it's possible to hire professional help, the cost would be between $150-300/mo (which YCD doesn't have), and regardless, they still need someone in the role of Treasurer to at least supervise. You can learn more by glancing at the state Campaign Finance guide, but, really, you should ask for information from folks here who have been Treasurer for a PAC before (Abbie Warmbier, Jacki Bessler, Marcie A Rosenzweig to name a few).
