Yes, It Can!

In our July 1 newsletter, we asked if change could happen. We pondered over the 400 years since the first enslaved Africans came to this country and how much has and has not happened. Well guys, yes, we've got big issues with systemic racism in this country, but guess what? We wouldn't be doing this work if we didn't think we (all of us) could make a difference. So the answer is, "Yes, it can"--change can happen and we thank many of you who are joining us in meetings, conversations, discussions, and community events to listen, learn, engage and make a difference because "working together is better."

TiBA Board member Julie Shelton attended the signing ceremony for SB 2090 and HB2541 on Wed., Aug. 21, 2019. Pictured above are Audra Wilson, Exec Dir, IL League of Women Voters, Catherine Mardikes, Exec VP, League of Women Voters Chicago, Lt Governor Julia Stratton, Julie Shelton, TiBA Board member, and Corinne Betty Magness, Illinois Political Director, Rainbow Push Coalition.
This legislation guarantees voting rights inside Illinois jails and establishes civic education for those re-entering society after completing their sentences. Julie worked with a coalition including the ACLU, Chicago Lawyers for Civil Rights, League of Women Voters and Chicago Votes to develop and pass this legislation.

Why Didn't I Know That?

The TiBA Board regularly asks the question, "Now, why didn't I know that?" We read articles, books, watch documentaries, go to museums, engage with partner organizations, and are constantly being reminded about so much history we didn't know about. In partnership with many of you, we are regularly learning about the history of this country which has oftentimes been left out of the history books. Our Education Cmte. is currently looking at the 1619 Project. Click here to learn more. If you have a background in education theory and research and would like to work on our education Cmte., we invite you to email us at
