What's Going On?

Marvin Gaye had it right when he said, "only love can conquer hate." Read the lyrics here. Very timely during this time of rancor and divisiveness. As TiBA celebrates its 3rd year since the first showing of The Long Shadow on May 10, 2018, we want to show you some love through opportunities for engagement and support. Check out what's going on below.

Here's one of the screenshots of TiBA's 2nd year anniversary. Over 50 people joined us last year and we're expecting more this year. If you're interested, click here to register for next Fri., May 7, 6p CST for an interesting, educational and engaging Zoom anniversary featuring Dr. Ava Thompson Greenwell, filmmaker of Mandela in Chicago. Click here to watch her documentary prior to our celebration and get ready for the interview and a live Q&A. Space is limited.
And There's Plenty More
We're also kicking off "TiBA's Take," our speaker series on various topics of interest. In addition to Dr. Thompson Greenwell, click here to read about other upcoming speakers such as our very own TiBA Board member, Dr. Raquel Farmer-Hinton, and author Richard Rothstein.

It keeps getting better! We are piloting our first virtual tour this summer. Click here for our flyer or go directly to our webpage. Due to limited space, we are initially limiting seats to active educators. If we do not fill our current slots, we will also welcome community participants. If interested, please email us at

Why Didn't I Know That?

We typically feature upcoming events here but we think we've shared enough about what's going on so we're going to ask each of you to search Google, newspapers, public announcements and find a local celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, a Union General rode into Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed. This is a way that you can join us on our mission of breaking down the resistance to confronting our country's shared legacy of slavery.

Well, we do have one announcement. TiBA and other partners and individuals are partnering with ComeUnity to make Race Amity Day an IL-recognized holiday on Sun., 6/13. A request has been sent to Gov. Pritzker and we are trying to get 100 signatures of support via Please click here to sign the petition.

WANTED: We're looking for volunteers. Is anybody interested in being part of our Newsletter or Engagement Team? We're looking for those of you who enjoy keeping folks informed and engaged about relevant work that TiBA is working on. We're also looking for breakout group facilitators for our virtual tour. Email us at to learn more. Thanks for your support of TiBA!
