Six years ago when past AALR president, Bette Lawrence-Water, and others started talking about academic achievement for African-American youth, I don't think any of us imagined we would be here today. And today, we have the DAAWN Tutoring Program that not only helps students academically, but we offer DAAWN dollars to students for fun prizes, go on fun outings, do community service projects, have a wonderful summer camp called "Super Tuesdays," hold parent workshops and more.
AALR has changed a lot also. Our focus is now totally on supporting and encouraging youth reach greater potential. We started the Rev. Henry Soles and Mrs. Olivia Garth scholarships and have now given scholarships to high school graduates for the last 3 years. We have great partnerships with St. John Lutheran Church, Darien District 61 schools, First Midwest Bank, Benedictine University, DuPage AME Church, CYD and others to provide greater resources, access and opportunities to our youth. We closed out the year with our Fifth Annual Holiday Luncheon Fundraiser with presentations by our students and a wonderful speech by one of our scholarship recipients.
We have a lot to be thankful for and recognize that we could not do this without you. Many of you have financially and prayerfully supported us and we are sincerely grateful for your support. A special thanks to those who came out to our luncheon, our DAAWN volunteers and District 61 Liaison to DAAWN, Kathy Spencer, who come back year after year to love, encourage and support our students. Thank you all!
As we close out 2016 and move into 2017, we ask for your continued volunteerism, prayers and support. If you would like to make a year-end tax-deductible online donation, please go to our DONATE page or make your check payable to AALR and mail to AALR, P.O. Box 4104, Lisle, IL 60532.
Peace, God's blessings and a Happy New Year.
