President's Letter
By Brian R. Tinjum, MAI
Greetings North Star Chapter Members:
The 2017 Trends Seminar was well received. A special thank you to Justin Reed, MAI - Chair of the 2017 Trends Task Force and his committee: TJ Espensen; Joan Johnson, RM; Byron Miller, SRA, AI-RRS; Frances Odenthal, MAI; Greg Reich, MAI, SRA; Sam Schulte, MAI; Mitch Simonson, MAI; Mary Ulwelling, SRA; Brett Hall, MAI, SRA; and Maribelle Cushman. I know they invested countless hours to present a successful program. Justin was also able to get an event sponsor, Co-Star. Thank you Co-Star for the sponsorship.
The North Star Chapter was able to sponsor Brett Hall, MAI, SRA; Christy Mackaman, MAI; and Kassidy Noem, Practicing Affiliate, to attend the LDAC meetings held in Washington, DC May 3 - May 5, 2017. I would like to thank Brett, Christy and Kassidy for providing their input on the discussion topics this year, and for visiting with US Senators and Representatives to lobby on our behalf.
Congratulations and thanks to the North Star Chapter Government Relations Committee: Byron Miller, SRA, AI-RRS (Chair); Christine Mackaman, MAI; Brett Hall, MAI, SRA; and Ray Vandeveer, SRA; for their hard work on passing additional legislation this year which benefit appraisers in Minnesota.
Congratulations to our newly Designated Members: Reid Loidolt, MAI; Derek Pedersen, MAI; Richard Nordquist, MAI; and Charles Paulson, MAI.
Association Development Services, Inc. is providing assistance to the North Star Chapter for accounting and other financial management/administration tasks. You may notice their address is being used for banking, bill payment, invoicing, and other financial management items.
The Appraisal Institute Board of Directors at their November 2016 meeting in Chicago passed the new Appraisal Institute Chapter Financial Management and Administration Policy. In January 2017 the Board of Directors suspended the implementation of the policy until further input from the Chapters and membership could be received. Currently, the anticipation is that we may hear more on the implementation of the policy later this year.
The Appraisal Institute Board of Directors at its June 2017 meeting in Ottawa, Canada, received for consideration recommendations from the Governance Structure Project Team on possible changes to the Appraisal Institute's Governance Structure. Information and materials are being developed to share the recommendations with all AI Professionals. The Board of Directors will be soliciting feedback before they make a decision, so be watching for the information. At the August meeting the Board will consider sending any governance structure recommendation to a 45-day notice. All AI Professionals are encouraged to take an active role in this important process. Please provide your feedback on the possible changes.
The 2018 National Leadership Resource Registry is now open. If you are interested in serving on a national committee or project team you are required to register by September 1, 2017. The Registry allows you to indicate your areas of interest and expertise and to volunteer to serve on the national, regional or chapter level. You are required to register and/or update your registration each year. Additional information is found in this newsletter on how to register.
Sincerely,
Brian R. Tinjum, MAI
2017 President
North Star Chapter of the Appraisal Institute
