President's Letter

2018 North Star Chapter President, Justin Reed, MAI, with 2018 Appraisal Institute President, James Murrett, MAI, SRA

We have many things to be thankful for as the Appraisal Institute North Star Chapter enters another year of existence.  The Appraisal Institute has remained a thought leader due, in part, to its publications, educational offerings and legislative efforts.  The combined efforts of many towards the common good of creating transparency and competency in the marketplace have indeed paved the way for the Institute to remain the preeminent source of valuation expertise.

The North Star Chapter has been blessed to have a higher than average amount of involvement within its Board of Directors.  We have also been fortunate enough to have received several decades of dedicated service from our Executive Secretary, Maribelle Cushman.  Thanks to all for their commitment and their countless sacrifices made on behalf of the profession!

As executive support roles continue transitioning to Association Development Services (ADS), with Sheryle Hazard at its helm, I encourage all members to interact with Sheryle and her staff.  The ADS Team is very capable of meeting your needs and I personally have been impressed with their level of professionalism.  Their team structure and systems approach will undoubtedly enhance our Chapter and its processes in the coming years so please make them feel welcome within our organization!

Board Member Spotlight

In each newsletter, we will feature a North Star Board Member. This quarter we're talking with 2017 North Star Chapter President, Brian Tinjum, MAI, of Tinjum Appraisal Company, Inc. in Detroit Lakes, MN.

North Star (NS): How did you get into the appraisal industry?
Brian Tinjum (BT): I was looking for employment after I graduated from college and decided to go to work for my father at his appraisal office.  Thirteen months later I went to work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation as an appraiser in the Right of Way section.

NS: How has the Tinjum Appraisal Company evolved over the years?
BT: Tinjum Appraisal Company, Inc. was founded in 1973 by Rodger K. Tinjum after 11 years with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  Our office is located in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.  Several individuals have been trained as appraisers over the years.  At one point the company consisted of two Certified Residential Appraisers and two Certified General Appraisers, who were all family.  Currently, the company consists of two Certified General Appraisers, an appraiser trainee and support staff.  We currently have an Accredited Rural Appraiser (ARA) designated appraiser and an MAI designated appraiser.

NS: What tips do you have for new appraisers?
BT: Get the best quality education available.  Do not compromise your integrity and ethics.  You will succeed if you do not quit!

Wisconsin Enacts AMC Law
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Nov. 30 signed SB 453, legislation that enacts comprehensive registration and oversight laws for appraisal management companies. The law takes effect July 1.
SB 453 is mostly consistent with the minimum requirements for AMCs as adopted by the federal bank regulatory agencies.
The Appraisal Institute’s Wisconsin Chapter supported adoption of this measure and provided input, comments and oral testimony as it was being considered.
