The Ottawa Seed Library

Thank You for signing up and becoming a member of The Ottawa Seed Library. We are a volunteer lead community group based out of Just Food. If you would like to join the leadership group and help us with the development and execution of our mandate, bringing community back to seed saving, please connect with us at

How does it work?

At the Ottawa Seed Library gardeners can take out one to two varieties of vegetable seeds and then at the end of the year we meet up, toss all seeds from community members who grew the same variety into a single lot, and each community member will then get seeds back, with the added benefit of the increased diversity from our neighbours' gardens.  Some seeds will remain with the Ottawa Seed Library to go back into the community each year. In doing so we intend to facilitate the development of an engaged and informed seed saving community that is able to preserve and distribute locally adapted vegetable seeds to gardeners new or experience alike.

I have seeds, what's next?

The monthly newsletter is your guide to the seed saving process. We will provide information and tips about sowing your seeds, making the selection of which plants to choose as the seed saving plants, growing and then how to collect, clean and select the seeds to give back to the library.

As you are new to the community, below are the links to the newsletters already sent to the community to catch you up. Have a look in the green menu side bar, for the Seed Library Inventory for  specific growing information about the seeds you choose this year. The information found in the green menu side bar is always be here and we do plan to add to it as we continue to refine what information the seed saving community needs for reference. The monthly articles will follow the growing season and be about what is relevant to you as you grow your plants for the seed library. We will also have a few events planned this growing season to bring the seed saving community together and demonstrate best practices in seed saving. I hope you will join us for these.
